After a half-eaten breakfast, Julian swam a good number of laps in the pool. His appetite had not been good since his hallucination, run-in with Gul Dukat, and argument with Garak. The time since then had allowed him to cool off, calm down, and think. He came to the conclusion that no matter how angry he had been at Garak, he missed him a great deal.

But the brisk shower he'd just emerged from didn't give him the energy boost he had hoped for and he sighed. He knew he felt tired all the time because he was not eating properly, but his appetite was the first thing to suffer when something was bothering him.

In his laundered casual outfit and towel-drying his hair, he started when he heard a knock on his door. Fully expecting it to be Kathryn, he was surprised to find Garak when he opened the door.

"Garak. Hello." A bit shocked to see his old friend, he didn't think to invite the Cardassian into his room.

"Hello," Garak said, standing with his hands clasped loosely before him. He blinked a couple of times and gave the doctor a significant look. "Am I to be invited in, or kept lingering in the hallway?" he asked.

"Oh! Come in." Embarrassed, he felt his face flush as he stepped aside to give Garak room to enter.

"Make yourself at home. Can I get you anything to drink?" He shut the door, stuffed his hands into his back pants pockets expectantly, and took a few cautious steps into the room.

"Thank you," Garak said, stepping inside and waiting for the man to shut the door. "No, I'm quite all right. I don't need anything to drink." Instead of taking a seat, he remained standing, lifting his chin slightly as he continued to speak. "I came here to apologize to you, something I don't know that I could have done when you and I associated on Deep Space Nine, even when I was wrong. Much has changed. I've changed, and I don't like what I did to you a few days ago. You didn't deserve it."

Julian groaned. "Oh, yeah, the Enigma Tales. You know how much I like mystery novels, but not those that end the same way every time. The suspects are always guilty in the Enigma Tales; not my cup of tea." He turned and walked to another set of shelves, eyebrows raised.

"I'd like to find a mystery novel called The Moonstone. It was written in 1868 by Wilkie Collins. Captain Jean-Luc Picard recommended it and I haven't had a chance to read it yet.

Browsing through another section, Julian came across more recent 23rd and 24th century works. He found The Teachings of Surak by the Vulcan Skon, Down the River Light by Caster, and ... The Dominion War by Ira Steven Behr and Ronald D. Moore ( ... )

"As I've told you before, the point of an Enigma Tale is not the discovery of who is guilty but of how. It's much more complicated than those silly Earth mysteries where the guilty party is obvious within two pages of his arrival. Honestly, Doctor, I would think you'd prefer a real challenge," Garak said smugly.

He selected several of his favorites by Shoggoth, holding them in one arm, and continued down further. He had his own favorite copy of Preloc and was really hoping for some newer material by a few other promising authors. He paid very little attention to what Bashir was looking at or selecting, for their taste in literature had always been disparate. He was in no hurry at all.

"I do prefer a challenge, you know that, but your definition of a challenge and my definition of one just ... vary ... slightly."

Seeing as Garak was in no hurry to leave, Julian concentrated on calming down and settling in. He took a deep breath and moved to the shelves on the opposite side of the huge room, taking his stack of selections with him.

He browsed for a while, not really seeing the words as much as noticing the colors of the lettering on the bindings. But then he found the works of another childhood favorite J.K. Rowling and his anxiety was forgotten.

"Garak! I've found the Harry Potter series! I'd always loved stories about wizards and dragons and other magical creatures and British author Rowling created the most fantastic universe based on them! It takes place in a school for young wizards and follows the adventures of Harry Potter and his two best friends ( ... )

"Well, it seems at least your nostalgia is getting fed, if not your intellect," Garak said dryly. At last he felt as though he had enough reading material to start with. He headed closer to where the doctor was with his. "I'm tired of being holed up in my room. This is a good place to read and sit for a while. Are you staying, or going? You know the chance of finding it again is only so-so."
