Kathryn looked up from her log at the knocking at the door. It was a strange sound to get use to, since all doors in the 23rd century came with chimes. She almost missed the rapping on the wood surface, being so deep in thought.

Janeway set down her PADD, amid the sketches of the sky people's symbol, a stale cup of coffee, and melted wax candles. While in study, she had become more casual, leaving behind her uniform jacket and instead was wearing a gray short sleeved turtle neck stolen from an older uniform.

She crossed the sitting room and to her door, opening to find Julian standing in the hall. "Doctor," Janeway smiled and stepped back to permit him in. "Did you find the workshop?" She asked.

Julian stepped inside, looked around briefly for Garak, and returned her smile. He handed Dukat's phaser to her for her inspection.

"Yes, and the phaser is fixed. Works fine, though I can't explain the huge scorch mark on the wall in the workroom." He smirked and moved on.

"I want to run an idea by you and Garak. I think I should run into Dukat before we give him back his phaser. It seems ... safer, don't you think?"

Janeway accepted the phaser, admiring the work that had been done to repair it. The metal casing was damaged possibly beyond repair...but the device appeared to be functional once more.

"It is against my better judgement to give this back." The admiral said with a sigh, setting it on her desk. "I'd sooner recycle it than rearm him...but is the lesser of evils when it comes to the weapons he could use."

Janeway turned back to Bashir and leaned on her desk. "If you think it is a wise idea. I am not sure if he is in a placating mood with Starfleet personal of any sort."

"No, he won't be, but that is why I'm in civilian clothes. He may not recognize me if he comes from a time before I arrived on the station. I'm hoping that is the case. By the way, do you know where Garak is? I'd rather he know of my idea beforehand."

He looked and felt a mess, and Julian thought about stopping at the Infirmary first, but decided to make his way back to Kathryn's room instead. It took him a lot longer due to his injuries causing him to stumble about, but while he walked, he thought about what happened and replayed the events in his head.

Clearly the hotel/Dominion had chosen to give him a hallucination. For what reason, he had no idea. From what he had heard from others, there was no rhyme nor reason behind the events. But what would the Dominion be doing holding people captive who had never heard of them and were born centuries prior to the Dominion becoming such an overwhelming force of power?

By the time he arrived at the Admiral's door, Julian was leaning heavily on it for support. He knocked and hoped she was in as he was in no mood to take his tricorder out and scan for her.

Janeway had tried to go back to work. Then she tried staring out the window at the desert. She had remained standing there, in the billowing curtains looking at the golden sands and feeling the warm winds drifting into the sitting area, chewing idly on a nail ( ... )

He leaned on her heavily, embarrassed for the state he was in. When he had left Dukat's room, he thought he was going to be fine eventually, but a rib or two must have fractured from that kick and he was having trouble breathing. He may have something going on internally, though he wasn't sure.

"I hallucinated. Instead of Dukat coming out of his room, I saw a Jem'Hadar soldier. I fired my phaser, but missed ... at point blank range. I never miss. It became a hand to hand fight when he kicked me and knocked my phaser out of my hand. I still don't ... understand any of it. He cut off my air, I fell unconscious, and he took me to his room. At least he let me live and put my shoulder back in place." He weaved a bit and started to feel nauseous.

"I think I should go to the medical facility."

Janeway was suddenly glad that Julian's slight form was a fair testament to his own weight as well. The admiral grappled with phasers and tried to free her hands to get a grip on the wounded young man. She listened to him talk while slipping am arm carefully along his back and gently taking him by one arm with the other ( ... )

As he pulled himself into a sitting position with Garak's help, Julian blushed and averted his eyes from Kathryn, not used to being fussed over like this in front of others. Sure, a few of the girls he had dated fussed over him if he were sick or had been injured, but that was in the privacy of their quarters or his. He remembered his mum and an aunt fussing over him ... but he was fifteen the last time that had happened ( ... )

"I think we can manage that," Garak said amiably. The look he returned contained understanding and advocated caution.

"When have I not pestered you, Doctor?" he asked innocently. He got the shirt settled in place. "Just put your good arm around me, and we'll get underway. We'll see you later, Admiral." He hoped earnestly that was true. If not, he wasn't sure if he'd ever forgive himself.

Janeway paused at the door and looked back, her expression sincere.

"I'll be back to check on you Julian." She said before slipping out.

Julian followed Garak's instructions, though rather slowly at best, and called out to Kathryn as she walked out. "Thank you. I'm counting on it."

He wanted to ask Garak where she was going, but what was the use? He knew. He knew that Garak didn't need any more grief from him either. He had already caused enough trouble.

He also knew he should have waited for Garak and not gone to see Dukat on his own. But he ignored that gut feeling that was nagging at him and set off anyway. Not his most brilliant moment.

"I think my enhanced ability to heal very quickly has been taken away. I'm usually not this sore after being treated. I could use another dose of pain meds."

Janeway did return to her room to change, slipping out of her Starfleet issues gray shirt and slacks and donning the least uniform looking outfit she owned...that being the red sleeveless shirt and black pants of her gym clothes ( ... )

Dukat had expected as much, the whole reason he had opened the door. Just inside the bedroom, Federation phaser in hand set to heavy stun, he made an inarticulate sound that could be taken any number of ways and waited. They couldn't leave well enough alone? They were about to find out just how different this situation was from home.

Janeway heard it, something that sounded very much like it was in distress. She reached out with one hand and pushed open the door, slowly. "I brought you supplies from sickbay." She stated clearly. "And your phaser, as promised. Bashir fixed it for you."

She wanted to ask the whereabouts of the missing one that had belonged to the doctor but thought better of it. Janeway walked slowly, eyes scanning the first room she came into...which looked a bit like her own only in different colors and adorned with things that must be for the Cardassian.

Janeway came within arm's reach of the desk were the computer sat and drew the phaser. She set it down on the tabletop. "I'm leaving it on your desk. I have no other weapons." She peered around the room once more and looked at the bedroom door, slightly ajar.

"Dukat?" She called out gently.

Every muscle coiled for action, he could see her through the crack in the door, his bedroom darkened with the drapes drawn. With the weapon in unerring focus, he made the noise again, a cross between a groan and a sigh. Reptilian eyes narrowed. Just a little closer now....

This post continues from this thread

Julian wasn't sure he should interrupt his friend. He looked so absorbed in his thoughts, yet at the same time, distracted by pain.

"Garak, if it's a headache, I have medication up in my room to help. It won't take long to go get it. You can come with me and then we can come right back here."

"If what's a headache?" he asked, blue eyes innocent. "Are you sure you're all right?" He held up three fingers. "How many?"

"Garak! You know what I'm talking about!" Julian lowered his voice so as not to make his own headache worse.

"Look, by not acknowledging you have a headache, you are only making my headache worse, you see?"

He forced a smile, not enjoying playing this game, but at least making an effort to be funny in his reply. He set his empty mug aside and crossed his arms over his chest.

"It's no wonder you have one anyway. Being trapped here with Dukat must be infuriating for you. Knowing Kathryn is probably facing him on her own isn't helping matters, I'm sure.

But I need to tell you something. I owe you an apology. I never realized what it was like to be in your shoes ... an exile on the station unable to go anywhere ... until now. I feel trapped here, like I'm being smothered very slowly. I just never got it until now. I'm sorry for not being more understanding back on the station."

"I'm afraid I don't," he said, shaking his head and maintaining the bland look. He took another sip of tea. "Perhaps you should stop worrying about it, and your headache will subside."

He hadn't been expecting that. His tea mug froze halfway to his lips, and he glanced up from it swiftly. Several things popped to mind that he could say. He finally settled on the only one of any real importance. "Thank you."
