Xander scribbled out a brief note to leave on his bed for a certain vampire slayer. Out digging up graves in front of the hotel. If I don't return, blame the alien named Gul Dukat. Okay, so that note was about 50% letting Faith know if she came over to hang out why he wasn't around, and the other 50% was insurance in case Gul Dukat's final plan was to leave him in the bottom of one of those graves.

It wasn't that he didn't trust the alien. ..well, okay he didn't trust Dukat, but that was because he'd only spoken to him between 2 private messages. No, he trusted Jack enough to not put him in too much danger (which, came from what? One night of drunkenly talking to him ( ... )

"Two weeks?" Kate repeated with a slight edge to her voice. Even more worrisome than the two weeks - because time was a bit unreliable at the hotel - was Dukat's revelation that Jack had thought she'd disappeared. She and Jack hadn't exactly been hanging out much lately, so if he'd noticed...

"What exactly did Jack say?"

"Yes," he said. "To the best of my knowledge. You know as well as I that time here can be difficult to track completely accurately."

He sat back and steepled his fingers. "My memory is eidetic. I can also send you the actual message as a forward if you desire. The part that pertained to you and Doctor Brennan was as follows:

'Tell it to a floor monitor, if there are any left. I have enough trouble keeping tabs on my nearest and dearest around here. If they're gone, they're gone. Sorry about that.'

I would've told a floor monitor, except at the time, I didn't know who any of them were or that there were any at all."

Xander nodded and decided to pipe up at this point. "Er.. the floor monitor program kind of.. didn't end so well when most of the monitors up and disappeared. ..which is ironic if you think about it." He paused to bask in the irony for a moment before continuing. "I do occasional sweeps of my floor just to check in on people, but I'm the only one that I can remember off the top of my head." And by occasional sweeps, he'd knock on someone's door and make sure there was a noise on the other side. Not that his method was truly reliable, considering the people could just be out of their room.

It was impossible to tell if the message Dukat rattled off had actually come from Jack and, if so, whether or not Jack had actually meant to sound so uninterested in her possible disappearance. It bothered her more than she let on, that Jack might have thought she was missing but hadn't bothered to check, but she only replied to one part of Dukat's statement. "You don't have to forward me the message," she told the alien. "I think I got the gist."

When Xander spoke again she turned towards him. "I don't think anyone ever ran a check on my floor, even back before so many people disappeared," she noted. "At least, not that I'm aware of."

That was ironic, but he decided not to read too much into it. He doubted seriously that any attempts on their part just to keep track of who was around and where at any given time was something threatening enough to warrant removing those responsible. "Was that the mass disappearance?" he asked. "Mister Winchester told me of that."

He nodded at Ms. Austen, unaware that anything he said in particular bothered her beyond just the general idea that she may have disappeared. "Now that we know what we're about, I'd say we should get started. We'll need shovels. There is someone I can get some from, but...I'm not entirely certain he will either wish to see me or be able to help dig."

Xander nodded at Gul. "Yeah, that's the mass disappearance.. a lot of people just did the poof in a short timespan. Dean and I spearheaded the search on that one." He said, remembering those messages on the network.

"Well, if we're in need of tools, the attic might have some. ..although I'm not sure how upfront the Hellton Inn and Suites are going to be with letting us have tools to dig up the graves." He said, wondering if this action was also futile.

Kate looked at Dukat a bit strangely at his comment about the person who allegedly had shovels to use. "Who's got shovels? And what's his problem with you?"

Might as well be blunt about it. If they were going to get anything done, they needed supplies. She held Xander's pessimism that the hotel might not necessarily supply them shovels, so if they could get them from someone else, the alien just might have to get over whatever little spat he'd had with said shovel-keeper.

"Mister Winchester," he said. Now that he knew both of them were committed to the digging, he was less reluctant to reveal the other man's part in the incident. "Our captors pitted us against one another in a joint hallucination." He gestured at the bandages on his neck and hand. "He got the worst of it. The last time we spoke, it seemed he blamed me for it. I understand his reluctance to be near me, but we really could use those shovels."

Xander nodded at Gul's explanation, and then something clicked in his head. Kaylee had mentioned Dean getting injured in a hallucination, but he hadn't realized that his grave-digging buddy had been involved. This of course made Xander all the happier that he'd left the note for Faith, since Dean (from his little experience with the man) seemed like he was a little tougher than one Xander Harris.

"Well, I'm sure he'll let bygones be bygones. I mean, what's a little near-death experience when you're trapped against your will in a high class hotel from hell." Xander said, unable to prevent some sarcasm from leaking into that statement.

Kate nodded. When she'd met Dean and they'd played pool together, he'd seemed like a fairly easygoing guy - and not one who'd let a freaky hotel-induced hallucination get to him too badly.

"I'm sure he'll let it go. It's not like anyone actually believes the hallucinations are anyone's fault but the hotel's," she pointed out.

He looked between the two of them. Perhaps Mister Winchester would be forgiving of one of them. In his experience with the man, he was much cagier with him. "I suppose we're about to see if you're right," he said to them, standing. "Let's go talk to him about getting some shovels."

"Well, here's hoping. I mean.. what's the worst that could haa..." Xander paused and stood up. "Nope. Not finishing that sentence. Not tempting fate this time."

It was times like these where he had his Buffy or a Willow around, because they'd be much with the bantering right now. Gul and Kate seemed more straight to business, which was no fun for him.

Kate arched an eyebrow, interest piqued at Xander's unfinished sentence. "What do you think the worst could be?" she asked, genuinely curious. His worst-case scenario probably would be influenced by what he knew of the hotel (or at the very least, of Dean) and that information could perhaps prove to be useful.

She looked at Dukat, then. "Do you know where he lives?" she asked, referring to Dean. She'd only met the man in the billiards room, and couldn't remember if they'd exchanged room numbers or not.

Dukat wasn't as curious, but he also wasn't going to deliberately alienate anyone who had agreed to help him. He stayed silent long enough to allow Xander to answer before answering Ms. Austen's question to him. "I'm going to have to contact him over the network to ask."

(OOC: Since this happened before the room monitor roll call.)

It was at this point where Xander gave them a blank look. No, they didn't get them, not at all. "No! I mean.. haven't you ever heard that you shouldn't ask 'whats the worst that could happen', because.. that's like tempting fate.. ..so, I stopped myself from actually asking what the.. well, you get where I'm going with this. ..don't you?"

God even Spike would have understood his ramble, and he kind of wished that he was there to bask in the awkward moment with him.
