Rose woke to a sharp sound at the door and a pounding in her head. Good lord, what had she done the night before? Oh... yes, right, consumed half the bar's stock of alcohol. The bottles scattered around the room told her she'd brought some with her for the next few days, too. Apparently she'd been anticipating the need for a lot of drinking in her future. But why...

Oh. Right.

Glaring at the door, she was fairly certain only one person could manage to be that annoying with a knock, and she very much doubted he'd go away, especially since the door didn't appear to be locked. She sighed and rolled over and... off the bed, flopping onto the floor with a very loud and rather profane curse she'd picked up years ago while they'd traveled with Jack. It may have been in English, but she couldn't quite tell in retrospect ( ... )

"Rose," he said mildly, sweeping past her into the room. "Can I assume by the expression on your face," he said, turning to look at her, "that you have no intention of apologizing for your atrocious behaviour of last night?"

As he moved by her, Rose closed her eyes and forced herself not to breathe in the smell of him, that comforting scent she'd missed for so many nights. Her head ached and she just wanted to turn and apologize and wrap her arms around him. But when she did turn, there was nothing apologetic in her tone, and instead she sounded both tired and exasperated.

"I have as much intention of apologizing for my behavior as you do for yours," she informed him.

"Oh?" he said, raising an eyebrow and crossing his arms. "And what have I to apologize for?" he asked. "Eating dinner?" He paused, pursing his lips pensively. "Talking to people, perhaps?"

Shit. She clenched her eyes shut, and then quickly brushed at the wetness on her cheeks. There was no hiding the fact that she'd been crying, not when he'd obviously been standing so close by, but it still made her feel a tiny bit better to put forth some sort of effort.

Her hand was trying to smooth out her hair as she opened the door, then she was tugging at her shirt to make sure it was in place. It hurt to see him standing there, so much like the ghost she'd described him as, but she couldn't help but be so very glad to see him there as well. He'd never hurt her intentionally, and she knew some part of him had cared for her as more than an entertaining pet.

"Hey." In all honesty, Handy was surprised that Rose had actually opened the door. There'd been no sign from her that she wanted to see him any more now than she had before, and the last several times he'd come to her door hadn't exactly ended well.

He could tell she'd been crying, and that she was trying to hide it from him. "Didn't get a chance to talk to you," he said almost cautiously, referring to the night when she'd apparently hit Gwen.

Despite how hurt she was by the very fact that he was with Gwen, Rose couldn't hate him for it. She could feel complete agony at the implications, but there was no way she could feel hatred toward him for trying to be happy. It was all she wanted for him, after all.

She stepped back from the doorway and quietly said, "Come on in." If he wanted to talk... they would talk. She was ready for it now. After everything with Jareth... Maybe she could finally get this part of her life back in order.

She just wished she had time to gather up all those stupid empty (and not so empty) bottles.

The surprises kept coming. Handy had expected to be turned away before he could even get a sentence out, not invited in for a chat. It gave him hope, though he still didn't have much hope for the ultimate tone of the conversation. She seemed amiable now, though, so he decided to go with it.

"Never found that album of yours," he said apologetically as he stepped inside. "I'd asked Holmes, but, well. He's gone now."

He glanced around at the room, frowning at the bottles.

Now she wanted to be friends. Handy could hardly be bitter, though--well, he could, but certainly not bitter enough to turn her away in retaliation.

"You had Big Ears, at least," he said, trying to joke because he was having trouble handling this conversation without resorting to some sort of defense mechanism. "Though I can see why you'd want the later model."

"You're not a later model," Rose said defensively, actually a little bit angry at his words. "You're all different, even if you are the same. No one's better than the others, and I miss each one of you every time I lose you." Because she did, inevitably, lose them all. It seemed she was doomed to always lose the men she loved.

Handy sighed and made a face. "He's just me when I was younger," he said halfheartedly. "Or, well, the other Doctor when he was younger. It's like living in the same building as yourself from high school."

She reached over and took his hand in hers. "Exactly," she told him gently. "You're very different people, you've just been through the same things. I know I like to think I'm different than I was when I first set foot in the TARDIS." Of course, that might just be hopeful thinking. Delusional thinking. Maybe she still was nineteen and naive and far too eager to run off with the first mysterious man to pass her way.

That last was a little too close for comfort.

Handy huffed, unable to take Rose's statement at face value. "It happened to you, too," he pointed out sullenly. He was just about done trying to push the point, though; Rose clearly wasn't going to talk to him about it, and trying to explain to her that it ate away at him every time he thought of it wouldn't get him anywhere.

"I'm sorry," he said, stepping toward the door. "I didn't mean to...start this."

"It's alright," she said quietly, looking down at the floor. "We never were very good at having deep, important conversations." It didn't matter which Doctor she'd been with, they just never... did very well with that sort of thing. It was something to accept now, accept and try to move on.

(OOC: GAH! Sorrysorrysorry, didn't realize it had been so long!)

Handy bit back a reply about how Rose had acted like he was so different from his future self because he wouldn't talk to her about things that mattered. Now was not the time to start another argument. "I'm glad I got to see you again," he said, opening the door. "Take care of yourself, Rose Tyler."

[OOC: No problem! *laughs* I'm probably neglecting a thread somewhere myself as I type....\
