Spike was less than pleased when he was woken from his nap by a knock at the door. The only person he wouldn't mind waking him up had a key, so clearly it wasn't her, so his intrest waned any further than that. He was going to try to roll over and go back to sleep, but the knocking only got louder, so he finally rolled out of bed and grumped over to the door, pulling on some jeans on the way.

"Wot?!" he demanded yanking the door open, his eyes traveling from where he expected the intruder's eyes to be down about a foot and half to where they actually were. "Nibblet?" he asked almost soundlessly, his voice stolen by his shock, simply staring at her for a long moment before gathering her up in a tight hug.

Dawn was more that surprised when instead of her sister coming to the door she was faced with an angry and very shirtless Spike. And if that surprised her, she was down right shocked when she was suddenly pressed against Spike's very shirtless chest.

"Umm, hi?" she greeted not exactly sure why she was getting such an enthusiatic greeting. I mean sure she liked Spike and all, and she was grateful that he was the one to help her break into the Magic Box last week, and he was totally her favorite vampire, but it was a bit unexpected nonetheless.

"Dawnie," he said looking down at her and noticing how young she was, before ushering her inside and going for a shirt, the girl in front of him the only person in this universe or any other that he wasn't really comfortable not being fully dressed in front of. "When did you get here? How old are you? When did you come from?" he asked in rapid succession, trying to wrap his mind around the fact that Dawn was now in the Hotel.

Dawn was a little disappointed when Spike put a shirt on. Sure, according to Xander he was with her sister, but she was a fourteen year old girl, she couldn't help but look. Shaking her head slightly when she realized he was talking to her, she looked around the room as she answered. "I got here a couple days ago, I'm fourteen and we just broke into the Magic Box the night before I got here. I already went over all of this with Xander."

Buffy's day thus far had gone pretty smoothly. She'd done a few laps in the pool, had some sushi for lunch, and curled up in the library for a while. The irony of it taking an act of Hellmouth proportion to have her willingly venturing to the library was not lost on her. She wondered if Giles would be proud ( ... )

Spike looked up when Buffy entered, waiting for the moment she noticed that they had company.

"So a stray came to the door while you were out luv," he said lightly. "I was going to ask you if we should keep her, or send her back out into the hotel to see if someone else wants to adopt her."

Dawn shot Spike an unimpressed look. "Who're you calling a stray? I've heard stories about Thanksgiving the year before last."

Buffy could not begin to understand their joking. Dawn was sitting right there. Dawn. Her little Dawnie... who she could tell even while sitting was back to being the shorter sister. And the year before last? Thanksgiving?

It took Buffy a moment to do the math but then there were tears in her eyes. She was from that year. That horrible year. How much did she know? The lack of a Dawn-sized bear hug told her it was before she'd taken the Great Leap, but did she know about... "I'll keep her," she said quietly, wanting to rush over to her but finding herself oddly frozen in place. "I'll always keep her."

(OOC: Sorry I didn't comment again last night guys! Forgot I hadn't turned on tracking and a little too used to people tagging at me. /fail)

Buffy gave a watery laugh at the sweater bit and the jab at Spike. That was her little sister.

"Considering all my Sunnydale clothes went the way of the Hellmouth and are now at the bottom of a giant crater," she said with a grin, "I think I can let the sauce incident slide. But do it here and I'll toss you in the pool," she threatened with a pointed finger.

Spike drew in a sharp breath when Buffy mentioned Sunnydale's fate. He certainly had not mentioned it and he didn't know what Harris might have said, but they were about to find out.

Dawn had a retort to Buffy's pool comment all prepped and on the tip of her tongue, when the first part of her sister's statement sank in. "Wait... what?" she asked looking back and forth from Buffy to Spike and back again. It was clear that Spike knew what she was talking about from his reaction. "Sunnydale is at the bottom of a what now?"

"Crater," Buffy answered without hesitation. The fate of their creepy little town had nothing to do with the stuff she didn't really want to tell Dawn, as long as she didn't get into the tiny little details, so she had no qualms about spilling the proverbial beans. "The Hellmouth is closed for business. We were starting work on the Cleveland one when I was grabbed by this place."

Northman? Oh, right. Eric? Something like that. She remembered running into him in the gym that one time... He hadn't seemed too terrible, but she'd never gotten to meet his wife.

Groaning at the question from Spike, she rolled her eyes and explained, "I'd just found out I was the Slayer, okay? My decision making skills weren't the greatest at the time."

Dawn bounced up and down excitedly at the idea of going out on motorcyle. "I was totally right earlier," she told Buffy, "you have gotten cooler, and you have defintely traded up."

She turned to Spike and shrugged in response to her question about Pam, "I dunno who her sire is, I just know we're supposed to be doing Yoga tomorrow morning."

"Clearly," he pouted. "Dawn is right, you have traded up. Honestly, Pike? For the love of..." he trailed off grumbling under his breath.

Buffy sighed loudly and wondered if she could jump out the window. "Let's talk about something else, shall we?" she suggested quickly. Turning to Dawn, she said, "Did you know there's a movie theater here? All kinds of movies, all the time."

Buffy rolled her eyes with amusement. "I think I remember sleeping through a biology lecture about recessive genes," she said. "That must be where the crazy comes from. We'll blame Dad's side of the family for it."

"We learned about that in science last year," Dawn grinned. "Punkett squares right? And when in doubt, blame Dad," she added, which had been a Summers' women mantra for years.

She got quiet when she replayed her last few comments in her head.

"Punnet squares," he corrected, frowning when he sensed her change in mood. "What's wrong bit?" he asked, giving her shoulder a squeeze.

Sitting up properly, Buffy tried her best not to cringe at the current situation. "Dawnie, try not to think about it too much," she offered. "It's complicated and stupid and none of that matters, not really."
