"We're mostly the same person anyway," said Handy tersely. Then, quieter, but no less tense, "And she wasn't my lover."

There was something unsavory about the term 'consort,' it seemed to him.

"You were when she tells it," Jareth replied into the dark. "And it still makes her weep."

"The way she tells it, that's not me," retorted Handy. Bitter? No, of course he wasn't bitter. Rose had only decided he and his future self no longer counted as the same person. And that had only been her rationale for sharing his life story with the selfsame bastard he was currently trapped in a lift with.

Why the hell should he be bitter about that?

"It would have been," Jareth countered conversationally, "if she hadn't given up on you."

"What do you think it meant?" Jareth retorted. "I understand what they're doing. You should be able to guess why, if you're as clever as you claim to be."

"Hmm," said Handy disapprovingly. He still didn't know what Rose could possibly see in this man. He would have found it at least a little bit funny, though, that Jareth had had the tables turned on him, if it weren't for the fact that he was trapped as well.

"Of course, I did not bring anyone there against their will," Jareth added. "But if they crossed my borders seeking to cross me, I certainly made use of the resources at my disposal."

"And that was entertainment for you, was it?" asked Handy, though he had to concede (silently) to the point that Jareth was at least morally superior in terms of not kidnapping people for the purpose.
