Temperatures in the 50'sF this afternoon, bright and sunny so I went searching for frogs.  Didn't even need a coat!  The ponds were still frozen, all I heard was one very sleepy chorus frog cree-ee-eeking, but one of the little spring ponds had melted on the edge where the sun was shining and I found FAIRY SHRIMP!!!  SPRING REALLY IS COMING!!!  It ( Read more... )

Springspringspringspringspringspring!

Those fairy shrimp are oddly...cute. (Even though the black things in the last video remind me of lice, ticks, and fleas, which are my mortal enemies.)

They have kind of like googly eyes!

I luv the googly eyes <3 ^_^

And the little black things have one type that is also known as "water flea" because of the jerky, hoppy way it swims. They don't bite, but I usually don't even tell people that when I'm doing pond programs or else no one will touch the water! The ones that bite are bigger, and pretty and shiny...

Spring indeed - the daffodils are up, some trees are having sex, irises and freesias have the green stuff going on - no buds yet that I've seen, but those'll come soon. :D

What lovely little shrimp! I remember a trivia program here, about a crustacean in Australia that can live for, what, decades (?!) in the mud, waiting for the rain again. I *always* wondered what sea monkeys were! Little shrimpies, huh? Cute~! (*fondly remembers Magic Rocks, too - wonder what those were composed of?) (and p.s., do friend me! I'll friend you, too! ;)

Hmmm, I wonder if the Australian crustaceans were tadpole shrimp? We don't have them here, they prefer desert habitats, but I raised some once from a kit, and they were sooo fun!

The sea monkey packaging, so misleading! The ones I remember had monkey-looking creatures wearing crowns and capes and sitting on rocks like mermaids, lol. OMG magic rocks! I remember those *looks them up* hmmm, the rocks are pieces of metallic salts, combined with a solution of sodium silicate - iinnnteresting...

(yay, friends! ^^)
