In the few weeks since I've been watching Atlantis I've grown to quite like McKay. I found what he did this week over the top, but I would have thought that his bosses would have known that the likelihood of him going too far was high. And in the little I've seen from both Stargates it's not like any of the rest are exactly moderate in their interferences with other planets/systems/peoples. They're always violating the prime directive (though I guess they don't have that on Stargate). I find the character rather loveable though he seems like he'll push the limits if he can. But then they all do.
As for Cordy, well, you know my love for her character. I don't think she'd have been as polarising if it hadn't been for the whole shipper thing, but maybe I'm wrong.
I think Cordy had both her fans and her detractors well before the whole shipper thing, but there's no question that as her relationship with Angel evolved that she became a bigger target.
I've never watched the original Stargate, but I agree - from what I've seen on Atlantis, interference with other cultures is not only not prohibited, but may (in fact) be required in some unseen Stargate field mission handbook.
My blinders are completely on for Cordelia. As far as I'm concerned, ship aside, she's hands down my favorite character from both Cordyverse shows. In fact, when I rewatch Buffy at all, its inevitably Cordy who cracks me up.
I feel the same way about Starbuck on BSG now as you do about McKay. I find it difficult to understand any perspective but my own.
McKay is a favorite on SGA - like Cordy, he provides comic relief and a refreshing bluntness. Plus he's wicked intelligent, ego aside, and who doesn't love that in a man? Combine his smarts with his awkward social skills and we have an adorable winner.
I know you have oodles of talent littered across your flist, but since I was icon-making anyway...I thought I'd throw in a McKay.
Wheeee! Thank you! Now you really ARE my best friend forever!!! Do you take icon requests? I have one specific one I want, but I really do suck at making them.
Like you, I did cut Cordy a lot of slack. Much more than any other character. I'm sure that is a double standard, but we do tend to look more favourably at those people we like and identify with.
Similarly, I do feel I tended to look down at those characters who I felt had wronged Cordy in some way or another. I'm sure I wouldn't have been so convinced that Angel was an ass had he not become oblivious to the fact Cordy was still actually alive. As for Connor, although I think I was always going to despise him, much of that loathing developed around the start of S4 when he began to get his greasy mitts on Cordy - despite the fact she appeared to have no real recollection of who she was. No doubt I could have judged them both in a much fairer way, but to be honest I dislike both of them enough to not even bother reconsidering ;)
I have to concur - I think I would have hated Connor regardless, because he was such a whiny little punk. But it would have been on the level of my Dawn hate (in other words, manageable) if not for the whole ConCord ickiness. But once they went there, it became damn near impossible for me to even watch him on screen, whether it was a scene with Cordy or not.

Rule 1: ALWAYS INTERFERE WITH ALIEN LIFE/SOCIETY/TECHNOLOGY AS YOU KNOW BETTER THAN THEM.
Actually maybe that's the only rule in the handbook...
