I got quite a bit further with Emily's room yesterday.  The two purple walls are done except for the strip around them where the tape is, to keep the orange from slipping over onto them.  The orange ones not so much.  I've already bought one additional gallon of orange paint, and I predict I'll need another by the time we're done.  My gut feeling ( Read more... )

When we painted Frazer's office orange, we actually got them to specially tint a primer orange. Even so, Orange takes a huge number of coats. We did two coats of primer, then two of the top coat.

Kristen, you have no idea how sweet those words are to me. My mom was awful, a tyrant who fought depression by getting angry at everything and everyone. I am the only one of my three siblings who has a child.
I popped my head just now into Em's room to share your sentiment, and she responded by saying that she felt really bad about not liking my cooking more. I told her, Emily it's FINE. It's no big deal, you're entitled to your own tastes, and as long as you're not asking me to do double duty, it's okay.
By the way, she roasted sweet potato fries for us tonight, along with reheating some basmati rice in the microwave, and ALONG WITH marinating and grilling chicken tikka for us. Nom nom nom. Some equity is so much appreciated!
Thank you again for your thoughts!

i can't tell you how nice it is to read about functional people being functional parents. i love my own mother, but our relationship was also tyrannical in many ways. i like seeing consciousness in action; it gives me hope that if i ever have children of my own i won't just fall blindly into "because i said so" grooves. you and ray are very ACTIVE, involved, PRESENT parents and i really, really love seeing that.

also, emily seems to be a great kid. i mean how could she not be, coming from y'all, but i'm often impressed with the stories about her. she seems mature and responsible and also conscious and present.

also, that dinner sounds delicious. :)

I think you have done just the right thing where Emily is concerned. I was sort of picky as a teen, and when the family was having something for supper I didn't like, I was in charge of fixing myself something else.

Thank you. Parenting: it's one job you never really know if you've got right.
