I tried seeds from a new company whose stuff we carry at work:  High Mowing Seeds.  Organic.  I got some lettuce seeds, planted them.  Lettuce typically takes 3 to 5 days.  These: eighteen hours, for Pete's sake, and they were starting up just beautifully.  I can grow them up into baby lettuces in our cellar, long before it's time to do anything in ( Read more... )

Not know who Tallulah Bankhead was? Heavens.

“They used to photograph Shirley Temple through gauze. They ought to photograph me through linoleum.”

"She was infamous for not wearing underwear. According to Hume Cronyn, during the filming of Lifeboat (1944) the crew complained about her flashing them when she had to climb a ladder to go into the mock-up of a lifeboat. When their objections to Bankhead's exhibitionism reached director Alfred Hitchcock, he reportedly quipped that he didn't know if it was a matter for wardrobe or hairdressing."

Dang, I love this!

Is there enough light in that cellar?

Oh, so you are a star at work? ;)

I have a whole setup, with four-foot fluorescent lights.
And yes, as far as the front end is concerned (oh well, and the grocery department, and okay, probably some others), I'm one of the nicest, hardest working people around.
There. I said it. As Emerson said, anything worth doing is worth doing well.

And you do it very well. :)

(When I read high mowing seeds, my first thought was "So you have to mow them?" )

... please don't tell my mother.

Thank you.

Yeah, I thought it was an odd name for such a company.
I've gotten some more of other varieties, so we shall see if they're all like that.

It's not hard at all to believe that you receive compliments at work. :D You are efficient and pleasant, which are the two things coworkers love.

Yay for the seeds. We also have seeds, but the back yard will have to be bushhogged and turned over before we can use them. Ah the joys of country living.

We have a thirteen-foot deep concrete slab behind our house. Originally had an awning over it. The metal framework was still here when we came, but the awning was huge and too cumbersome to be put up easily, not to mention it would have cut the light off from the back of the house, which I could never tolerate. The slab is what I built my greenhouse on. There's enough remaining space to support the enclosure I plan to make: a four-foot by six-foot "box", four-foot high. It'll have a wooden framework (pressure-treated, natch), and hinges on one corner, so I can enter, as well as on the top because some varmints can climb and others, well, I had a doe sail over my chainlink fence last year to eat my daylilies. That ain't gonna happen again, so there will be one panel on top, screened in like all the others. I've started buying smart pots, which are these really neat pots we carry at the store. They're made of fabric which aircools the roots of the plants in them. I've had mediocre results with veggie plants in pots, and I think ( ... )

Great job on the seeds! I'm *just* managing to keep everything alive right now.

And yay for compliments at work! It's lovely to get recognition and confirmation that you're doing a wonderful job.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

It's late summer there, isn't it? Bone dry and warm if not hot? At that stage of things, I live with a watering can in my hand ( ... )

Haha, of course I got that far ;D

I'm sure it's lovely having Emily home but a relief when you get the house back to yourself :D I hope you've had some quiet time today and the tea was good!
