10 book reviews

Jun 12, 2005 10:48

I've managed to put a dent in (well, really only to make a small bruise on) my reading lists, but I haven't posted any book reviews. I'm not up for anything super-detailed right this second, but let's see if I can manage a quick overview of a few of them.

Against the Tide: The Battle for America's Beaches, by Cornelia Dean. Nonfiction ( Read more... )

are you reading the british or american editions of the Rebus books? Only I know for a fact that Rankin was made by his american publishers to alter his books (mostly by adding a final, tying it all together chapter) for the american market. Not at all how they should be- there's supposed to be an ambigiuty at the end. I've only read a few of them (after a while I admit I found them a bit samey) but I think what i like most is that they're set in Edinburgh with loads of cultural references which appeal to me. I live a five minute walk from Arden street. He frequently namechecks Mogwai, one of my favourite bands.

And I used to serve him and his kids popcorn, when I worked at the cinema.

If you want good scottish fiction, check out Christopher Brookmyre. Now that's the ticket.

I'll check which editions they are when I'm at the library again. Thanks for the Brookmyre reference. I hadn't heard of him before. I'll add him to my list.

I had read SAND first, and then NOT SO FUNNY.. and I know what you mean. They're published by the same folks who stick religiously to a single format, which makes it feel like you're just reading an extension of the previous book. But I'm a sucker for a travel story all the way around so I easily forgive it :)
