The Act of Drinking Beer with Friends is the Highest Form of Art
Whee!
I tried and failed with War and Peace
Me too. Didn't get very far. I recommend the "A remembrance of things past" graphic novel. Still pretty dull, but it's *quick*, and you get to find out what happened (nothing).
Was bored by "Cryptonomicon" and returned it to the library before I'd got far. I think I'm not really into steampunk.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Is that the picture-book where it eats through various things and then turns into a butterfly? I remember that!
"appallingly monolingual"
It's just, there are so *many* other languages? How do I choose?
*Agrees with calla_s again - wonders if I have to choose any of my own*
Heh. We're not alone. I certainly go straight to the B's, the E's and the K's in the library. I get bonus Brin and Kerr that way, too.
I've only read "Fire Upon the Deep" by Vinge, but that was great.

That's the one. Would've put See Spot Run and the Digger series, but haven't read those since year 1 and think I read a bit slower then.
Vinge has a couple of short stories on the net... rummages:
