I quite like Martha, but I too wish they weren't pushing the romance angle, at least not right away. I would have preferred if Martha loved her adventures with the Doctor and thought he was awesome, but stuck to the "I only date humans" thing. The whole unrequited love angle just seems so unnecessary and what's the point of having a companion who's much more sensible and less idealistic than Rose if she behaves exactly the same as Rose in regards to the Doctor?

YES I THINK SO PRECISELY. Not that there was anything wrong with Rose's character, but if we HAVE to deal without her, the least they can do is not try to replace her -- the least they can do is try for completely different yet equally good storytelling!

I would like Martha a lot more if they were more consistent with her character. They're all over the place; they can't decide whether she's a competent, unruffled medical student or a heartsick, pushy girly-girl. They had all the right elements at the beginning of "Smith and Jones," and then they just smooshed it. I don't understand.

I so totally agree with you on the episode of Smith and Jones, I cannot believe that Martha already expects the Doctor to be all over her when they have just met.

Really enjoyed your comments and your fiction

Thank you

HURRAY! Thank you so much for the feedback -- it really means a lot to me to know that you enjoyed hanging out here. :) I appreciate it.

(It really is ridiculous. I wish the good people at Who Headquarters would get their acts together and give Martha's character some depth.)

AGREED ON SO MANY COUNTS.

I think having Martha pine after the Doctor makes her way less cool. I would adore her if she just didn't give a shit if he "liked her that way." This just seems to make it ... well, stupid. :P

there can only be so many amazingly awesome, smart, funny, sassy women in the world before things just get ridiculous.

I dunno. I wouldn't mind a couple more. ROSE TYLER, CAN I HAVE YOUR BABIES? Y/N?

Plus (sorry to double-comment), I've been thinking about this recently and it's just kind of WEIRD that we don't see any evidence of Martha's past relationships and yet she seems to be all self-possessed about romance and very into the Doctor. She seems like she very much lacks maturity in that department, and I'm not sure the writers really thought about that aspect of her life before just throwing it in.

Quite literally, someone as GORGEOUS as Freema Agyeman would DEFINITELY have had multiple run-ins with sex by the time she reached her twenties. You just can't escape it. (I mean, I'm not saying she's definitely had serious relationships, but she's got to know her way around a flirtation, for one thing, and she's not even showing that she knows that. Right now she's kind of like a twelve-year-old girl with a crush.)
