Well, I'm back in Greenock, in my dear flat. Had a good journey back, and returned to beautiful (mild) weather for this time of year.
So far I've at least managed to do 1 load of washing, and my Tesco food shopping. Of particular importance is the discovery that Tesco now sell plantain!!! I was over the moon to see it there, and I'm looking forward ( Read more... )

Welcome home !

re plantain - it's a cooking banana ? Recipe?

We have *plantain* here too, BUT it's a 'ubiquitous weed' ! A smallish broad-leafed weed that grows unwanted in lawns and gardens. When we were kids we used to play a game with them; we'd pick a handful of plantain heads on their stalks, and hold out one at a time in our hands one at a time, for someone else to whack at them with one of theirs. The winner of the game was the one who knocked off the most. :)
It was fun, but we were probably contributing to the spread of the weed, as the 'heads' fell to the ground.

Thanks for the welcome :-)
Your account of the game with the leaves is rather amusing.
And yes, plantain is a part of the banana family. Back home in Nigeria we eat it alot. It can be cooked in a variety of ways - frying, boiling and then into a pottage, roasted too. Personally, I prefer it fried. It's a great accompaniment to a main dish or even just on its own. My fave meal used to be blackeye beans cooked with palm oil, and fried plantain....yummy!!!!!!!!

I think you may be able to cook them in a microwave in their skins(but split the skins first to avoid explosions!).

I LIKE banana fritters, pan-fried in a little oil or butter! -
