Go to sleep now!
River kicked her feet against the end of the bed after Jayne’s loud and demanding thought.
“I don’t wanna!”
“Well, why not?” he groaned as he covered his face with his hands. River whined.
“Because…”
Jayne brought his hands down and turned his eyes to the girl next to him.
“Ya know, that ain’t much of an answer,” he remarked and raised an eyebrow. River flared her nostrils and pursed her lips. She grabbed the pillow behind her head and slapped it full force across his chest. He grunted at the sudden pain and growled.
“Leave the girl alone, you big ape-man!” she cried out and pulled back to hit him a second time. Just as her arm came back down, he reached up and grabbed the other half of the pillow.
“Yur tryin’ my patience, girlie. Go. To. Sleep.” River pulled the pillow away and sat up.
“I’m not sleepy, Jayne-man!”
Fuming, Jayne sat up as well and began to scoot toward the end of the bed.
“That’s it! Imma go to the mess and try to sleep there,” he announced as his feet touched the floor, but was quickly pulled back by River’s unusual strength, once again in bed.
“No! Don’t go!” River panicked at the thought of sleeping on her own and threw herself back into her corner of the cot. Jayne sensed her fear and sighed.
“I need some sleep, crazy. I gotta wake in a few hours to take over the watch,” he stated as he closed his eyes, hoping that she would finally decide to give him some peace.
It was short-lived.
“But I’m not sleepy,” she whispered, which made Jayne jump back to consciousness.
“Look, close yur eyes, and start countin’ sheep,” he explained and turned on his side away from her. His eyes began to drift as the lids slowly descended before he heard River’s voice again.
“One, two, three-“
“River!” Jayne cried out as he sat up and stared down at her. River frowned up at him and pursed her lips.
“You told me to count sheep,” she pointed out and crossed her arms. Jayne grunted extra loud and shoved himself back on the bed.
“Count in yur gorram head!” he yelled and turned back to his side. He felt her sigh and move closer to him.
“Jayne?” she asked softly and placed a small hand on his shoulder. He turned on his back and glared at her.
“What is it now?”
“Hold me?” she whispered and pouted slightly, “The girl will fall asleep faster that way.”
He stared at her, his gaze firm on hers, and furrowed his eyebrows. “Promise ya won’t make a ruttin’ sound?”
River lifted his right arm and curled herself against his side, her face snuggled against his chest. Jayne, too tired to argue further, wrapped both arms around her and dipped his head into her hair, inhaling her soft scent.
“Promise,” she whispered hazily before finally falling into a deep slumber, Jayne joining her seconds later.
