You may also be hitting the "overqualified" wall. I do hope someone pick you up because you are a super hard, dedicated worker, someone just needs to give you a chance.
Children's books run the gamut of beautiful, graceful illustrations to "what was the publisher thinking are they blind?" Realism, stylized, even slightly abstract. I think it depends on the book, author, and publisher And what they feel works best for the Iindividual story.
I'm sure you've heard if Ursula Vernon who is quite successful and does both the high-powered technical fantasy and sci-fi stuff as well as illustrating her own children's books. It is possible to do both!
You might also consider trying to noodle your way in with freelance stuff now. It can't hurt to do the odd job here and there and get your feet wet. You're mich better than you think you are.
I'm definitely still hanging on to my long-term goal of becoming a fantasy artist, but for now I need to make my art marketable, and I'm not at a level where I can compete with anything but kids' books or editorial illustration!
You're totally right about how many styles are out there for picture books; it's crazy that it's all over the place. Now I just need to find a style that I think will be something I can enjoy and something that will appeal to publishers!
