Slowpoke help!

Hi everyone, long time no post!

I was just rearranging my Slowpokes and found my poor boy has been damaged by humitidy/age/something?? He has been in this cabinet since I moved into this house 5 years ago, and he was minter than mint when I put him in there. Not direct sunlight, not a particularly moist house either. Early era vinyl/pleather/ect. material is the worst. Sadly it's just part of the item aging, at this point. I have a similar situation to yours; where some of my items with this material have aged poorly, while others are pristine, and they're treated exactly the same. One culprit could be temperature variation, but I can't confirm that either.

I don't know of any methods to carefully preserve this type of fabric either. It's one of those ones where age just takes a toll on poorly designed products :( Hopefully someone has advice to alleviate this issue on your Slowpoke! I would try getting in contact with plush makers who specialize in restoration.

Hidden Gem Toys wrote an article about plush made of vinyl here: https://hiddengemtoysreviews.weebly.com/blog/bonus-advice-vinyl-beanies-and-ufo-catcher-plush-dolls

Basically, it's an unavoidable fate for most vinyl plush from this era. Just being exposed to air is all it takes. The author wrote that they store their plush in some form of container, so maybe you could try that to prevent further damage!

You did nothing wrong. All plastics will degrade like this over time. I have the hugest problem with clothing with vinyl decals or purses made of polyurethane to the point I avoid both unless the price is right. I have purses where the paper tags are in perfect condition while the bags themselves are flaking. ( TTATT )

Anyway, depending on how crafty you are, you can go to a craft store, buy vinyl that matches and replace the damaged parts with it.
