I am one of those 'collectors' who loves to buy things...and 'love' them. x3 I use my vaporeon phone charm as a phone charm and take it with me everywhere. I also carry my vappy pokedoll plush with me in my purse once in awhile. c:
I like to take my plushes out once in awhile, though I am mindful of their tags, I still like to show them the world. xD It sounds silly I know, but I don't like buying something...and just letting it sit up on a shelf to never be played with. ;-;
I'm always taking them somewhere, or using them for something, but also being very mindful and careful and not letting them get dirty. Whether they may go down in cash value or not, my concern is loving my items, not hoarding them. xD

I don't think there's a wrong way or a right way to do collecting at all. I collect houseware's. And, yes, of course I use them! I use all my jars, cups, tea sets, etc - unless they're too fragile and I'm scared. I don't want a bunch of plush in plastic sitting around, it just seems... plastic and pointless, to me. It feels lifeless and boring. So of course I cuddle my plush gently too. Especially if I'm not reselling anything (and generally I don't). Besides, it's mine. I bought it. So I can do what I like with it, naturally.

For modding stuff, I definitely don't mind. Even if the plush is super-rare/expensive, it's yours. To do with as you see fit. Unless you're going to tear it apart, learn the pattern, sew it up and try and sell it again without telling anybody, hey. Whatever. ^^" And you never necessarily need to take apart plush to learn its pattern, anyway - I learn patterns via foil wrapping the plush and cutting that apart. I've never remotely minded the re-paints and stuff, but I don't really care for figures. xD;

(p.s. ... )

The items I collect are for display only, but I have thought about using some, like plushies for their soft cuddly purposes. My Umbreon canvas got snagged by my dog and left some dents in the tag and I pondered on taking it off completely and using him, but decided against it. If I ever really wanted to use a specific piece, I think if it wasn't too terribly expensive, I would try and acquire a second, identical one for its intended purpose.

With modifying, I really try and get kids, plush or charms for each member of my team and others from the games so I have a physical representation of them. So I've thought about getting some kids and painting them a shiny color since one or two of them are shiny variants. But again, I'd need a second less valuable one to mess around with.

I could never bring myself to use something like a notebook... I just know I'd write or draw something in it and then hate it later...

I totally use things like stamps and stickers, though! Also use clearfiles to organize scrapbooking odds and ends, sticker sheets, etc.

I love your ideas of laminating notebook pages and turning things like hair ties into earrings, though. Cute ideas!
