Hylla and Reyna watched the smoking ruins of the island they had once called home fade into the distance, one with tears in her eyes (smoke, from the fire, she would later say) and the other with a stoic expression on her face. She bent down so that she was looking her younger sister in the eye.
"Shh, Rey, it'll be okay, just stay brave"
"But, the island it's all gone, the pirates, they--" Reyna choked on her words, not quite crying, but not quite silent either.
"Reyna Avilo Ramirez Arellano, you look at me and know that you'll get through this. You are a daughter of War, and you can do anything you want to. Remember what mother said?"
Reyna's voice shook, and was barely audible, "What doesn't kill you--" Her voice broke off at the end.
"Makes you stronger." Hylla finished firmly.
Both sisters turned away from the wreckage they could no longer see and towards a world which they no longer knew.
"You know, one day we'll look back on this and laugh." Nico said, after surveying the damage the most recent swarm of monsters had left behind.
"Yeah," Percy snorted, with one hand seemingly glued to the back of his neck. "Your mother's apartment didn't just get trashed by a dozen hell hounds."
"I guess this is the last time you guys have me over for dinner."
Nico looked up from his latest attempt to slaughter a pile of leering green pigs with a boomeranging toucan and frowned at the god sitting across from him.
"What does?"
"Your father's, ah, relationships -- you'll want to aim that a bit lower, by the way, it's all in the rebound," Thanatos drew a finger across the screen, and sent another toucan flying. "None of them last. Not even the queen really stays here forever."
Nico pushed the tablet away, letting the bird careen wildly off screen. His eyes narrowed, but the god seemed oblivious.
"Did my father--" he started, images of fireball-flinging rages and secret digging into banned topics flitting through his mind.
"My point is," Thanatos continued on as if he hadn't heard. "All mortals die. And there's no point dwelling on it. You might as well forget and move on, lad."
"I can't just forget my mother's murder"You already have, once," the god pointed out
