Ubiquitous End of Year List Continued: Music

I don’t listen to the radio much beyond NPR. I don’t get MTV or VH1. What music I am exposed to usually comes from what I read about. If something gets a good review from some magazine, I will check the album out from the library take a listen and then decide from there if I like it. Therefore some of the albums on my end of list might not be ( Read more... )

Woohoo Janelle Monae! I saw her in concert last year as she opened for Erykah Badu in Boston...however, I am a music bum who has not bought an entire album for yearssss and often just find my favorite songs, download them, and listen to them until I get tired, so I'll have to check her out more.

Nice top 5 lists. :)

Oh wow you saw Janelle and Erykah in one show. I am so jealous of this as they both are artists I love. I'd definitely advise checking out Janelle Monae's whole Archandroid album along with her ep Metropolis: The Chase Suite. I love them both and can't wait for her to release something new. I just can't get enough of her. I love R&B music, but I absolutley love an R&B artist who melds her music with rock and funk. She does these both so well.

Top tracks for you to check out: Many Moons, Wondaland, and Oh, Maker.

Cool! I'll definitely check it out...I've been musically stagnant for a little while, so it'll be awesome. I definitely agree with you...the rock/funk influence in R&B keeps the music fresh and creative, as some R&B artists can get stuck in the "Oooh, baby, baby" track...

I have an RB/Soul station programed on my car radio, but really like 60 percent of it is just ooey gooey cheese. I love the genre, but lots of singers can't create anything worth while. I find myself gravitating to artists like Andree 3000, John Legend, Erykah Badu, and of course Janelle ... all of who take something old and make it sound fresh and wonderful. Hope you enjoy the music. If it wouldn't be weird I would make you a mix CD of my current favs. lol
