You're right about the time assumption, and I do see your point. However, it's all up to interpretation; and for this particular story, I chose to see them as very much in the first blush of love right up to the bitter end. Next time, maybe I'll write a Strained!Puppies fic...oh, god, the plotbunnies. XD
