I think my husband has taken for granted that I don't speak French fluently. Yes, I took four years in high school, and I keep studying. I can read a good bit of French, but speaking and listening are a lot harder for me, mostly because I've been taught with an American accent. Pronunciation is hard, and I'm still getting used to their accents.

Cute story! I had a similar experience in Spain understanding something no one else expected me to pick up on.

Boy, that WAS quick wedding! It seems you were just on the verge of flying over there. But I guess that's an advantage to having the state fully handle the licensing-- it's not elaborate. You show up with witnesses, it's done, and then any more extensive celebration happens elsewhere.

I had no idea that the French were somewhat cake-averse, since even _I_ know what 'gateau' is. A cream puff tower? For a wedding? Ugh, what is the point of that?

Though I am very much a cake & frosting person, and pastry is mostly just "okay." I'm glad you got to have your cake, and that it was good-- that would have been one of my priorities too!
