My fiancé doesn’t fit the French stereotype. In fact, until I started coming around, he never bought baguettes. Like, how is that possible? You have some of the best bread in the world at your disposal - there are literally boulangeries every few steps. They’re like Starbucks for bread. And you never have one at home? How is this even possible? Are ( Read more... )

this made me so hungry. >.<. and it's so fun! i was in paris a bunch of years ago and had cassoulet, which was DELICIOUS but i think it has bacon in it and you said you're vegetarian, so... probably not the right suggestion. it's white beans and I can't remember what else, besides bacon. i love raclette, tho. and bread. and cheese. (but I too prefer not to drink my dinner. I have a great chicken soup recipe that my grandma used to make, but I can't eat it unless there's stuff in it.)

>>and found out that the French don't think cheddar is cheese<<

*gasp!* brits and vermonters (and probably wisconsinites) everywhere just fell over in shock. of course cheddar is cheese! hmph, france, hmph. how disappointing.

Mmmmmm, bready goodness. For a little while we had some French climbing friends studying here that climbed with us and they had the best climbing food tradition! It was a giant loaf of hearty bread baked special for the weekend trip, known as “big f$&@ing bread.” It kept well, and tasted awesome with cheese or jam or avocado and a few handfuls of salty nuts. And it was really fun to keep referring to it as the big f$&&ing bread all weekend. I love reading your joy at finding new customs in France.

I should have been born French for as much as I love baguette! I once devoured a whole baguette on my own after Passover because I went without bread for 8 days. I want to just walk around all day and eat baguette (especially with cheese)! :D
