Oh, God, have you tried inserting your GIMP-generated graphics into a LaTeX file? That took me DAYS AND DAYS to figure out.

Actually, I think someone tipped me off to ps files, so I included the psfig package and would use xfig. Eventually I learned that GIMP can export to ps and life was easier.
