Well, I took my problem to the Sims 2 community and it looks like I have an answer. The problem is that I'm running an integrated graphics card. Sure would've been nice if the sales guy had mentioned that when I asked if the graphics card was alright for gaming :C Anyway, my graphics card can't be upgraded because it's built into the motherboard,

Awwh, that really sucks. But at least you're taking steps to make the best of it and doing what you can, like saving often in case it crashes. I'll still be around even though you're stuck with bad graphics :)

It's not even that bad really, as long as I remember to save often enough. I'm about 25% done with the next update and only one of the screenshots looks borked (the bed turned black for some reason). Bryan moved in and I built a house :3
