But seriously, I totally love this. It's poignant, it's heart-warming, and a little bit chilling too, all those demons. And I love it that the demons didn't dare do anything to Dean. Lovely!

This foreshadows everything I fear for the future, but it does it so well and convincingly. These things are always better handled in stories, I think.

Dean was too weak for Sam, so he stayed behind. Sam was too dark for Dean, so he left.
S4, don't do this to me! Though I'm almost certain you will. :(

Dean doesn't know if Sam means the world's fate. He doesn't know if Sam means them. He remembers Castiel's words, though, and he says, "No. No, Sammy."
I love this passage, and this detail. In the end, the personal between the two of them still matters even when the world is coming apart. I think Dean's forgotten that at the moment, and this is such a perfect description of his realizing that.

Such an unexpected direction for this prompt, mainly because I shy away from S4 while others find solid footing in it. This definitely feels real and fitting, and if the aftermath has them coming back together again like this then I'll take anything that happens in between.

Admittedly, I wasn't sure when to place the boys with their apologies. I feel like, though, right now with how much tension is building between them, it's going to take a lot for them to come to terms with each other and the different directions they're wanting to go. But. Maybe Kripke will spare us that much angst. *crosses fingers*
