If you haven't already, try checking out uShip . I'm in the process of planning a move, too, and the cheapest option so far has come in the form of a bid from this site.
Also, there's Door-to-Door moving and storage as a PODS alternative.
Way back when I had to store stuff and was living in Oakland, the best bet was a storage joint on the South Side. Can't recall the name now, of course, but I think they had a huge sign or something. Good luck.
Not for long distance, but for local stuff, I've had terrific luck (twice!) with The Dudes Who Move. Professional college kids who need extra bucks, very friendly, relatively cheap, and amazingly accommodating.
When we realized they moved a few very heavy boxes to the attic that were our mislabeled kitchen stuff, the first reaction on their part was "cool, we have empty hands going down the steps, anyways, can you double check the rest of these boxes so we can get everything in the right place for you?"
They do not have a truck; we wound up renting a Penske van or something similar, and paid them to both load and unload. Ballpark was $20/hour/person, and they didn't slow down or stop at all to rest.
FWIW, I used the Guardian Self Storage on Millvale several years back for a between-moves situation where I wanted a very Oakland location. No complaints. But it was long enough ago that things may well have changed.
