Does anyone know if all these mailboxes disappearing around the city are part of some permanent budget cuts for the post office, or just some weird temporary security measure for the G20 ( Read more... )

It's standard procedure for preparing cities for large protests; London started it, maybe ten years ago, Washington, DC occasionally follows suit in certain neighborhoods. I'd also expect them to remove trashcans downtown. A stick of dynamite dropped into a metal container becomes an over-sized pipe bomb.

Odds of it being a problem? Almost none. Odds of it being a problem now? None.

They've also removed all large rocks from fountains and landscaping Downtown. Looks like at least one of the smaller banks Downtown has plywood over every exposed surface. The Starbucks is "renovating", and has a 30ft barrier around it, looks like.

There are also signs on all of the newspaper dispensers at the Station Square T stop saying that they'll be removed as of Wednesday.

I think it's about having less objects to pick up and throw if things get out of hand.

I noticed that too, but if you feel like climbing the hill, there is still one in front of Western Psych. Unless they removed that one too, but I guess since it's not on 5th, they figured it's safe to leave it alone. Besides, if anybody gets wild up there, then the hospital security will strap them to a bed and admit them! lol
