Nurseries

May 13, 2009 17:11

I would like to buy plants for beautifying our yard - where are good nurseries? I am especially looking for a rhododendron that will grow big. We live in the city, but I am happy to cross a river and go through a tunnel, if necessary.

I believe that this may have been asked here before, but could not find any previous entries.

Chapon's on Streets Run Rd (baldwin, I think) sold me two beautiful rhododendrons. They come with a three year guarantee.

I've been really happy with the advice I've gotten there. And they have a nice cat.

I second Chapon's. I've been going nowhere but there for years. They're incredibly helpful and know their stuff.

another one for Chapon's. It's the only place my mother (who is an avid gardener) goes to get her flowers/herbs/vegies this time of year.

LOL you're awesome. Whenever I say the same to people like it's no big deal, they say something like "you didn't grow up here did you?". Dude, these rivers are so narrow you can walk across the bridges. I'm used to rivers you can barely see across, hehe...

LOL plus if you live in NoVA, going anywhere is an impressive commitment. Five miles? Yeah that could be an hour.

;)

Sestili Nursery in Oakland has never let me down. They're a family run business and very knowledgeable.

I have a less-than-happy rhododendron you can have if you want to dig it and haul it. It was planted in my full-sun yard by someone who doesn't understand its natural shade-loving tendencies. It's healthy, but won't grow until it isn't cooked so much and for so long. It flowers and is fine and is free. If you're interested, comment back.

btw, I'm in the city too. You likely won't have to cross a river or a tunnel to get to me.

Oh, we have plenty of shade, and I would be happy to adopt it! It will probably have to be some time next week (I am carless Thursday and out of town Saturday).

There's a place at the corner of Allegheny River Blvd. and Coal Hollow Rd. that had rhododendrons out the wazoo last week. (I think Coal Hollow has a different name at that particular intersection, which of course I don't know, but it's a major intersection and the garden place takes up an entire corner -- you cannot miss it).

It's Sandy Creek at that intersection. :-)

That's tedesco's, they are under new ownership this year. Excellent prices on manure and potting soil-not sure how their plants are.
