German food in Pittsburgh?

Apr 20, 2009 09:51

I've heard in passing conversation that there is a Hafbrau House in Pittsburgh. But, google has links to blogs that talk about it, but no actual listing and one place says that it's closed.

Is there a menu online? Is it open? Is there other German food in Pittsburgh, or do I have to go to Columbus for sauerkraut balls?

food, food: restaurants

I recommend Max's Allegheny Tavern on the Northside.

The only thing is that I don't believe they have sauerkraut balls. Everything else is really delicious, though.

In addition to Max's, there's Penn Brewery. http://www.pennbrew.com/

It was going to close but things got worked out! \o/

Don't think they have sauerkraut balls, though.

I was disappointed, too. Their menu was way smaller than I anticipated.

If Kleiner Deutschmann in Springdale is still there, they have really excellent german food, though it's rather expensive. Worth it if you can afford it though, you get served by guys in leiderhosen and the restaurant is a great old victorian house.

If you are going on the weekend get there EARLY! We went at around 6:30pm this past Saturday and there already was a 4 hour wait and they were no longer taking names. We ended up going to the Irish pub across the street instead, which was quite tasty anyways! But I was a bit dissapointed I couldn't celebrate my German heritage that night. :-/
