Board-game Bars?

Nov 29, 2008 15:51

So I just heard of the best idea ever: board-game bars. They are exactly what they sound like.

Are there any in Pittsburgh hiding somewhere? If not, someone should open one!

food, entertainment: bars, entertainment, things to do, places: squirrel hill

I wish there were and hope some would pop up. Especially one for chess. Maybe people should just bring board games with them to wherever. And I would think they would also just catch on.

tuesday night at the squirrel cage in squirrel hill has been game night for ages! (unless something drastic has changed - i haven't been there in about 2 years.) the last time i lived in the 'burgh they also had great specials like an appetizer and a pitcher of beer for $6.95. greatest bar ever.

But is it quieter and in all board-game only mode or is it still a regular bar but with board-games?
What I think is so appealing about the board-game bars is the atmosphere and lack of noise so you can just have drinks and conversation with your friends (without hosting at home, as well as trying a variety of different board-games).

I keep telling my buddy that we should just pick bars at random, whip out the backgammon board and see what happens.

We would love a place like this.

Yeah, all of my friends would too. Now my fiancé and I are debating whether or not there is a market for it, so we could open our own. Ah... dreams...

In as geeky a town as Pittsburgh is? Yeah, there's a market.

Coffeehouses tend to be more suited, and in other states, where the liquor laws are less, um, strict, you can just walk into one that serves and bust out your game.

I found myself in the Blue Moose Cafe in Morgantown yesterday and did just that.

In any case, I've not, but I would be interested in it if it happened.

On the coffeeshops tip, the Kiva Han on Craig and Forbes not only allows board gaming, but has several there for people to play with. I see folks geeking out all the time (there's wifi as well).

This is way out of the way, but when I was in college, my friends and I would often go to "The Other Place" in Meadville, PA (up towards Erie), also called the Penny Bar because the bar, walls, and other things were covered in art made out of pennies. There were tons of board games there, but it was still a regular bar.

It was my favorite college hang-out. :)
