On the user info page of pghveg we list a bunch of local restaurants and their websites (when available).
The two I don't see mentioned here yet are Milky Way (in Squirrel Hill) and Maggie's Mercantile (in Oakland). Milky Way is a Kosher dairy restaurant, which means they're closed on Saturdays (and other Jewish holidays), and they also serve fish. It's very much a pizza-and-hanging-out kind of place.
Maggie's is on S. Craig Street near the museum and is mostly a stop-in-for-lunch kind of place. I'm pretty sure they're all vegan. They also have some other items for sale, like cook books and kitschy recycled housewares.
It's more Israeli than Jewish, if that makes any sense.
The ambiance is "fasfoody," and the food is a mix (they do a lot of pizza business, but they also have great veggie stuff like the portabella sandwich). Lots of greasy french fries too.
I say you'll never know if you'd like it until you try it. :)
Maggie's yesterday was bad, mostly due to the employee working, but Big Meh. Being patronizing to customers who ask, "so what is all this stuff" isn't such a great plan.
You might also try pghveg. My recommendations are based on being vegetarian but having non-veg families (sounds like the reverse of your situation).
If they will be in town on the 20th I very highly recommend the Vegetarian Prix Fixe at Kaya. Actually I recommend them anyway, during happy hour; their mixed drinks at half price are a phenomenal deal, you can sit outside when the weather's nice, and the mix of meat dishes for you might make it more palatable. Get the bean dip and tofu cracklins to soak up some of the liquor (the drinks are as strong as they are tasty), good times.
I just ate at La Filipiniana in Lawrenceville last night. You can eat outside there too, it is also mixed meat/vegetarian, and the Asian Pumpkin Shrimp Curry (which I got made with tofu) is seriously one of the best things I've ever eaten. It's BYOB, no corkage fee.
If you're less adventurous than Caribbean or Thai, my vegetarian self brings my non-vegetarian family to Piper's Pub, another place that does good with both. Drinks-wise it's best for scotch
( ... )
I can't speak to that location since I haven't been there, but I do know that only the one in Lawrenceville has outside seating. If Squill's more convenient and you don't care about outside seating, though...
