How wonderful: Fahrenheit 451.

Only in Texas would a story about a totalitarian society bent on wiping out "bad" knowledge through the burning of books be banned.

"It's just all kinds of filth," said Alton Verm, adding that he had not read "Fahrenheit 451." "The words don't need to be brought out in class. I want to get the book taken out of ( Read more... )

OMG. I had to read that it high school too (or was it jr. high?) Normally, I am a great lover of books and treat them with the utmost respect (I even worked in a library for many years.) But as for "Lives..." I recall doing many awful things to that book in the form of stomping on it, throwing againsst brick walls, writing stupid comments in the margins, stabbing it with pens, etc. I think the thing that was strangest thing was that the climatic chapter is when she "baptises" herself in the river or some such (I highly doublt pitofinsanity will ever read this, so I'm not worried about spoiling it). Not being from a religious family or knowing anything at all, I had no idea what baptism really was or what it meant to some people.

Anyhow, that was one failed book report.

Yay! Pitofinsanity lives! :) Book-banning really frosts my cookies. In grade 9 I recall reading a book called Runaway: Diary of a street kid by Evelyn Lau. It was in our school library, and if any book would cause furor in less liberal areas, it's this one.
I remember reading somewhere that some schools would rip out the pages concerning vaguely-alluded-to masturbatory activity in Judy Blume's 'Deenie'.
I'm rambling.
Reading=super. Banning=ignorant.
