The hills had eyes, Stefan knew. Eyes that still saw, though they were dulled by death and blood. Ears that could still hear the screams and prayers and gunfire. The hills could taste the smoke and filth, the flesh burning and decaying. They could feel the thunder in the ground and the insidious deaths falling from the sky.
It was a bleak landscape of bodies-hills of them, with roads and ditches built of bone and flesh. Broken limbs sprouted from the heaps like ragged trees, bowing to the sun even as the earth slowly devoured them. As Stefan navigated the city of corpses, he reluctantly admitted that Damon had been right all along. There was no need to worry about the morality of killing humans: if he didn't do it, they'd inevitably do it on their own.
