For the first time in months, Hasshi finds himself with nothing to do. Afternoon practice is canceled due to Kanjani8’s sudden arrival in town, and Hasshi spends half an hour wandering aimlessly around the jimusho building before heading into the busy streets with all intentions of going home. On the way back he passes by a relatively new bookstore with an adjacent coffee shop, suddenly remembering Kana mentioning its famous cheesecake. Digging through his pockets for loose change, Hasshi decides to walk into the shop and blinks at the line. While shuffling through his bag, he drops his money. The coins roll a few feet away, just far enough for the boy to catch a glance of someone familiar situated at a distant table at the corner of the café.
Kamei sits with his back against the wall, busy flipping through a book with various notebooks scattered in front of him. His cup of latte is used as a paperweight to hold all the material in front of him down. He looks up when Hasshi stops in front of the table. “I don’t need a refill yet, Th-“ He pauses, “Oh.”
“Long time no see,” Hasshi smiles awkwardly. “I wanted to say hi. Are you busy? I’ll leave you alone now.”
“No, I’m fine.” Kamei grins back in his signature fashion, patting the seat next to him. “Sit down.” He continues when Hasshi obliges. “My cousins are over at my house. They’re really obnoxious, and I can’t concentration on schoolwork at all when they’re around.” He nods at the studying material in front of him. “Sensei will get mad it I don’t finish this on time again.”
“I see.” The younger boy replies. He doesn’t know what else there is to say, and settles with playing with the hem of his jacket instead.
“How are you?” Kamei asks thoughtfully, tapping his pencil against the smooth surface of the table.
“I miss you,” Hasshi responds before he has time to think. He lets go of the breath he has been unconsciously holding after seeing Kamei’s smile. “Sorry for not-”
“It’s okay,” the older boy replies, leaning on one elbow. “There are things in life we can’t control.” He pauses, “It’s funny that we’re having this conversation. To tell you the truth,” he takes a deep breath. “I’m meeting someone here. That loser is running late again, but you should stay.”
Hasshi nods instantly, not quite ready to leave Kamei behind. Not again.
A flustered Asaka shows up when Hasshi finally places an order with the waitress. The boy is clad in a heavy winter coat and an endless scarf. He blinks once, then twice upon walking up to them. “Hasshi?”
“What took you so long?” Kamei wants to know, “Did you get sidetracked after spotting some girls again?”
“No,” Asaka makes a face as he takes off his coat. He turns to the youngest boy. “This is surprising. What are you doing here?”
“I wanted some cheesecake.” Hasshi points at the pastry counter.
“Oh, remind me not to order that.” Asaka tells Kamei. “My manager gave me a speech yesterday. Basically, I’m morbidly obsese and am not allowed to eat from now on.” He spends ten minutes reminiscing about the food he used to eat on location shoots. Kamei tells them about the bento his girlfriend makes for him everyday, and Asaka congratulates the boy for actually keeping a successful relationship.
“Really, though.” Kamei laughs after awhile. “I’m surprised at myself too.”
It’s a topic Hasshi hasn’t dared breach, not since Kamei stopped showing up to rehearsal months ago. He had always regarded the girl with a bit of antagonism for being the cause of Kamei’s suspension. Watching Asaka and Kamei, both of whom he has failed to keep in contact with, chat happily with each other makes Hasshi feel a little guilty, and maybe a little lonely as well.
Fukka comes an hour later. He pulls at the hem of his baseball cap upon entering the shop, just like the old days when they used to walk to the station together after practice while attempting to stay below paparazzi’s radar. Asaka waves at Fukka while Kamei pokes at the newcomer’s cheeks.
“I left in the middle of doing chores,” Fukka explains. “I had to crawl out of a window. Okaa-san wouldn’t let me go until I cleaned the entire house.” He stops, “What’s the occasion?”
“There is no occasion. We just wanted to talk.” Asaka smiles and offers Fukka half of his cake. He tells them about his new agency and all the pretty girls he has met up to now, stopping when Hasshi’s phone buzzes as the notification for a new message.
They take a good amount of time laughing at Inoo’s text, undoubtedly sent to half of the juniors, asking if anyone has seen his lost keychain. Kamei calls the boy before Hasshi can snatch his phone back, grinning at Asaka while gesturing at the speaker.
“Hello?” Inoo’s voice filters through the receiver.
“You’re not still carrying around that keychain of Sailor Moon, are you?” Asaka asks, grinning at Kamei. “I thought you grew out of that phase!”
“Does your heart still go dokidoki every time she transforms?” Kamei wants to know, shooing Fukka and Hasshi away as Asaka cracks up in the background.
Inoo pauses at the other end before speaking up, “Taku, is that you?”
“What about me, Inoo-chan?” Asaka mourns pitifully into the receiver. “Don’t you care about me?” They spend the next ten minutes fighting for the phone while keeping a thoroughly confused Inoo on the line. Asaka pauses considerably while staring at Hasshi’s wallpaper after they finally hang up the phone. “This is cute,” he says, showing Kamei the purikura of Top3 in the background.
“I’m with A.B.C. now,” Hasshi tells them, playing with his napkin. “It’s kind of awkward. I liked it so much more with Nokkun and Sana-chan.”
“You look so much older now.” Kamei replies and leans forward to touch Hasshi’s hair. He brushes some of Hasshi’s neatly styled bangs into the boy’s face on purpose. “Just how much have you grown?”
“He’s all legs,” Fukka adds. “You should have seen him tripping over himself and nearly knocking half of Kisumai offstage.” He then proceeds to tell the story of how A.B.C. tied the laces of all of Kisumai’s roller skates together during their first yokohama concert.
Inoo shows up by the time Asaka finishes his third cup of frappuccino. “Look who I brought,” Inoo nods towards Takaki and Daiki, both of whom look a little disorientated. “We came as soon as the meeting finished.” He explains.
“What’s with your hair, Dai-chan?” Kamei laughs at the array of different-sized curls, ignoring Daiki’s attempts to slap his hands away as he continues to poke at the other boy’s dark locks. “I didn’t know perms were back in fashion.”
“Hikaru got a little curling-iron happy,” Daiki says as they pull extra chairs up to the table. “He keeps sticking things in my hair while I’m sleeping.” He tries to straighten the back portion of his hair out, only to give up when the curls bounces back from his futile attempts.
Takaki steals the rest of Fukka’s dessert before waving another waitress over. He shows everyone pictures of his puppy while Hasshi makes fun of him. Kamei realizes that he has forgotten about his homework and proceeds to stress out over equations and integrals while Inoo does the problems for him. Asaka laughs in embarrassment when Daiki pulls up the former’s new website up on his keitai.
“Wow,” Takaki says after awhile, pulling out a wallet from the pockets of his jeans. “This definitely isn’t my wallet.” He grins sheepishly and tries to ask Daiki for money.
“Are you wearing Yabu’s pants again?” Inoo asks between mouthfuls of bubbletea.
“Yuyan,” Kamei says after a moment of silence. “I didn’t know you had that sort of relationship with Yabu-kun!”
“It’s not what it looks like!” Takaki protests. “I just grabbed the wrong one because we changed so quickly to come here!” He stutters to a halt when the boys only offer looks of disbelief in return. No one bothers to point out that Takaki is also wearing Yabu’s shirt.
“Really,” Inoo says as the waitress brings over their fourth order of soup. The table is already cluttered with plates and utensils. Kamei’s notebooks are stacked at the distant corner, thoroughly abused after Hasshi drew little doodles of doraemon and after Fukka accidentally spilt some soda on it. “That keychain was a good luck charm! It helps me on exams!”
“Speaking of which,” Kamei cuts. “I’m taking university exams in a few months.” He grins when the other boys blink at him. “Don’t give me that look! I’m actually really smart, okay? I placed seventeenth on our yearly exams!”
“Taku-chan,” Takaki shakes his head. “All grown up, going to college and breaking hearts.”
“How’s Mayuka-san?” Daiki asks quietly, playing with his straw as he stirs at his ice tea.
“She’s good,” Kamei shrugs. “I make her cry a lot,” he grins, a little embarrassed. “Relationships are weird, you know? I can’t say anything about love, because nothing really lasts forever at our age. But, given the chance, I want to stay with her for a really long time.”
“You should introduce her to us,” Inoo smiles. “I want to meet the girl that stole Taku from us.”
“Ha,” Kamei laughs, slapping Inoo on the arm. The latter winces and complains about future bruises. “My parents love her. I guess, being with her was one further step to being normal. I still don’t now how I feel about it.” He sighs, cheek leaning on his palm. “Dancing and practicing was my life, and now it’s completely different. Not better, just different.”
“We work so hard for this dream in hopes of making it tangible, but in the end I still don’t know what I want in life.” Fukka concludes thoughtfully. “It’s an odd feeling.”
“Taguchi-kun used to say that it’s good to be young.” Asaka hums, playing with his fingers. “It’s okay for us to crash against the wall at this age, as long as we pick ourselves up and keep going.” He smiles shyly. “I’ve never forgotten what he said.”
“I’m really proud of you, Ko-chan.” Daiki is the first to reply after a period of silence. “I never got the chance to tell you, but I really am. I hope you become really successful in life.”
“Yeah,” Asaka blushes at the compliment. “But it’s scary. I barely know anyone, and it’s so hard to start from square one.”
“You’ll be fine.” Hasshi adds when his voice finally comes back. “You don’t need us to be amazing. But, we’ll always be here to support you if you need us.”
“Aw, Inoo-chan is crying!” Takaki cuts in with a small laugh. He turns around to pat the said boy on the back.
“Sorry,” Inoo sniffs, wiping at his eyes with his sleeves. “I can never talk about sad things without tearing up.”
“It’s not sad,” Fukka laughs, hugging Inoo from the side. “It’s just nostalgic, but growing up is all about that. I’ve gotten used to failures. It just makes me want to strive harder for goals.”
“I know we’ll reach our goals,” Hasshi nods fervently. “Even if we can’t do it together.” He laughs when Takaki pulls him into a headlock. Daiki grabs both Inoo and Fukka from behind while Kamei and Asaka join in on the group hug.
“Excuse me,” a small voice says from besides the table when the boys finally stop laughing and crying at the same time. A girl stands in front of them, shyly playing with the hem of her skirt. “Sorry to interrupt, but aren’t you members of-”
“No, we’re not. You can’t have a picture, and I’m not taking Yamada’s gifts to him.” Takaki replies instantly, pulling his hood down.
“Stupid,” Inoo slaps the older boy on the arm.
“What?” Takaki cries when the boys begin snickering at him.
“Sorry,” the girl giggles, covering her mouth with her hand cutely. “I just wanted to know if you are members of JJExpress.” She blushes. “I used to watch a lot of the Shounen Club.”
They spend the next few minutes each attempting to flirt with the girl. Asaka laughs when they manage to find out that she has shop-photos of each member on the walls of her room. Inoo passes a piece of napkin around as everyone signs it for “Minami-chan.”
“Just curious,” Daiki grins. “Who was your favorite member? Come on, just between us.” Regardless, everyone else begins making pitiful faces at the girl.
“Um,” Minami says at last. “I liked Nakajima-kun the most,” she finishes in a small voice.
“Oh, come on.” Takaki urges, “He wasn’t even a permanent member!” He then proceeds to show her embarrassing photos of Yuto on his cellphone. They hand her the signed napkin and wave when she finally leaves, thoroughly flustered.
“That was very noble of us,” Fukka decide.
“She promised to buy JUMP’s CDs,” Inoo points out with a laugh.
“Please,” Asaka declares. “She was busy glancing at me the entire time. Did you see that?”
“I was never a part of this,” Kamei adds. “I have a real girlfriend.” He demands pictures when Hasshi mentions Kana. They spend the next few minutes talking about girls while exchanging numbers and taking pictures with their camera phones.
“I can’t believe it’s been six hours,” Asaka says at last when the one of waitress warn them about the store’s closing time. He wraps a scarf around his neck and laughs when Takaki can’t find his gloves.
“AUGH!” Kamei tears at his hair. “I didn’t finish any of my homework!” He makes a face at them, but breaks into a smile when Inoo hands him the discarded notebooks. “It’s been fun.”
They make no promises of meeting up the next weekend, or any time after that. Inoo and Daiki sigh and wonder what Julie will do to punish them for sneaking away from practice. Asaka complains about his schedule. Hasshi goes over his timetable for the next month while Fukka mourns about having to finish his chores.
They part ways under a hazy sky. The loneliness and sadness is still there, but Hasshi swallows his tears and waves happily at everyone. Endurance is a part of growing up, he decides, and goes home with a peace of mind.
