narcoleptics Author's Notes: Does a Waterbury bypass exist? Is there a bridge on it? What way would someone have to be traveling to use that route to get to Hartford? I have no freakin' idea! I never was good at word problems.
Summary: The night of the party, but where is . . .
Chapter 1Chapter 2Chapter 3 Chapter 4
Sunday afternoon, after a long, luxurious bout of lovemaking, Dean was just tracing the curves of Rory's body when he said, "You should go buy something new this week, for the party."
"I have clothes." She scratched his chin under his scruffy beard.
"I know, but your grandparents have seen all your nice stuff. You should have something new for Christmas. You should have everything new for Christmas."
"Shoes, too?" she asked, a little puzzled.
"From the ground up."
"Can we afford that?"
"Yeah, I've got it covered." He kissed her. She didn't know he'd been squirreling away money for four years, trying to save enough to go to school. He still wasn't even close. He had less than half of what he'd need just for the first year. May as well do something with the money.
"Are you sure?"
"Rory, have I ever been reckless or irresponsible with money?"
"No."
"So if I say it's covered?"
"It's covered." She smiled, and kissed him back.
Which made it all the more perplexing when, come Friday night, Dean was nowhere to be found. Rory was near hysterical.
"WHY would he DO this to me? He Promised! He PROMISED me he would go!"
Lorelai put her arm around her daughter. "Hey, babe, you don't know that he's not coming. Maybe he just got hung up somewhere. Did you call Tom?"
"Yes, and Tom said he left early! At four! Where has he been for THREE hours!"
"Did you check with Gypsy?" Luke asked. "Maybe she needed his help with something."
"She said she hasn't seen him all day."
"Have you called his cell phone?" Luke tried again.
"Yes, five times! It goes straight to voice mail! God, I will KILL him!"
"Rory, just calm down, okay? He may have a perfectly good reason for being late." Lorelai took the necklace the Rory had been trying to fasten for at least ten minutes, out of her hands, untangled it, put it back around her daughter's neck and fastened it. "This is beautiful, is it new?"
"YES! Yes it is new, because DEAN said that I should get all new stuff, stuff that Grandma and Grandpa had never seen, for the CHRISTMAS PARTY which he SAID he would come to! Do you know what else is new? This DRESS is new, and these SHOES are new, and this PURSE is new too! Oh, and the EARRINGS! And the PANTYHOSE and even the UNDERWEAR! EVERYTHING is new in fact EXCEPT the HUSBAND who is supposed to be AT MY SIDE, and MAYBE that's something I should CORRECT!"
"Sweetie, don't say things you'll regret later," Lorelai admonished her.
"I'm trying his cell phone ONE more time, and then I am filing divorce papers!" Rory punched a number on her phone viciously.
Luke stepped close to Lorelai and said quietly, "You don't think maybe something happened to him?"
"Nah, it's Star's Hollow. If anything happened to him it'd already be halfway through the phone tree by now, and the extra edition of the paper would be going to press."
"True," Luke agreed.
"VOICE MAIL!" Rory announced. "DEAN! This is your FORMER WIFE! You have exactly THREE SECONDS to materialize in front of me, before I THROW this RING out the window and CHANGE ALL THE LOCKS!"
Lorelai grabbed the phone out of Rory's hand and clicked it shut. "Okay, I think he'll get the idea. Look, let's just take a seat, maybe watch some TV, I'm sure he'll be here soon."
"No!" Rory began pulling on her coat with quick, violent movements.
"No?" Luke asked.
"No! I won't be late to Grandma and Grandpa's party because of HIM! When I am expected at a certain place, at a certain time, I am THERE! Because I am a mature adult who KEEPS HER WORD!" She opened the door and stalked out to the car. Luke and Lorelai followed, feeling like the Red Queen's minions.
By the time they arrived at Richard and Emily's Rory had calmed down enough to appear fine, so that when Emily said, "Oh, I thought we might see Dean tonight." She was able to smile and say, "He got jammed on something at work, but he'll be here if he can get away."
"Well done, grasshopper," Lorelai whispered to her after they'd joined the party.
"I learned from the best," Rory said, taking a glass of wine from a passing waiter. "But I'm still thinking of places to hide the body."
"You know," Luke decided to put his two cents in. "I think you should give him the benefit of the doubt. Dean isn't the kind of guy to break his word if he can help it."
"Rory!" One of the DAR women approached them. "Darling you look lovely!"
"Oh, thank you Julia, you look lovely too," Rory answered.
"You know my husband, Roth?" Julia asked.
"Yes, I think we met at the tea you had," Rory answered. "Hello, Roth."
"Rory," he shook her hand.
"I was hoping to get another glance at your handsome husband, what was his name again?" Julia inquired, looking over Rory's shoulder, in case she'd missed him.
"Dean, and he's running a little late."
"Hope he's not taking the Waterbury bypass," Roth said. "Water came up over the bridge there and it's black ice for miles."
"Oh, yes!" Julia added. "We saw a little blue car go right off the road! It was in the lane right next to us!"
"Oh my God, was anyone hurt?" Lorelai asked.
"Well, I don't know. I called 911 on my cell and explained to them where it was, so I'm sure help got there soon enough." Julia took a cheese puff from a passing waiter with a tray, "My, these are sinful!"
"Julia, you know my mother, Lorelai. And this is her husband, Luke Danes," Rory finished the introductions. There were hellos and handshakes all around and then Julia and Roth drifted on to mingle.
"You don't think anything happened to him, do you?" Rory asked.
Luke scratched his head. "The project the construction crew is working on is near Bridgeport. There's no reason for him to be on the Waterbury bypass."
"Besides, aren't you his emergency contact? Surely someone would have called your cell by now," Lorelai said. "Don't you think?"
Rory gave a huge sigh and sat down on a conveniently placed couch. "Truthfully I don't know what to think any more. Maybe I should call his parents, or his friends?"
"You haven't called his parents?"
"No. I mean there's no reason for him to be there. At first I thought he was held up at work, or at Gypsy's. Then when I couldn't get an answer on his cell phone, I assumed he'd just wussed out and was avoiding me, which he probably is. But I think maybe I should call his parents, just in case."
Lorelai looked around the crowded room. This was one of the Gilmores' bigger Christmas parties. There were probably thirty people there already. "Well, if you do, go upstairs to one of the bedrooms and close the door. After you told mom one thing, you don't want one of these biddies, excuse me, one of her 'friends' hearing something different."
Rory nodded and went up the stairs.
