I thought about making curtains when we first moved in but we have a lot of windows which already have storm windows, regular windows, venetian blinds and curtains, so it seemed silly to spend a bunch of money on fabric to make curtains when who knows if they will fit the windows of the house I eventually hope to buy anyway.
but now the plain plain beige-whiteness of the curtains are really getting to me and I'm thinking I just need to suck it up and find something cheap to make curtains with, just for some color, it doesn't even have to be thick, and maybe use long basting-type stitches so I can easily rip them out and reconfigure the fabric later. Any suggestions for super cheap fabric?

Honestly, the best place for cheap, colorful curtains is IKEA. If you can't do that, I'd go for a thrift store or estate sale.
