I was pretty impressed with Seah & Merry's Blu-Ray, upscaling, also play things from a flashdrive DVD player when I visited last year -- but I lack specs. But if they (or Margie) don't respond to your plea, I would try knocking on their (virtual) door!

I have a Philips BDP 5010 that plays DivX. I haven't found a hack for it yet, but it has brought me much joy.

Cool, I will look into that one. Do you mean a region-free hack? I have never needed to play other regions, at least so far, so that might not matter so much for my purposes. Thanks!

Yes, no region-free hack yet. but I'm sure one MUST exist someplace. In the meantime, I've kept my Philips 5040 just to play R2 and R4 discs...

I love my playstation 3. I play a game on it maybe once a year, but it's a great blu-ray and upsampling dvd player, and if you get it on your home network (it has wireless built in), you can stream divx/xvid from your computer live in a variety of ways -- on Mac I use medialink (~$30 software). I watch vids/avis on it from my hard drive all the time. :D

I also have the Logitech Harmony One controlling everything including the PS3 and the Tivo HD, and it's awesome, the touch screen makes it well worth the crazy $$$.

Huh, I had never even thought of getting a gaming console instead - but that is a nifty idea! The streaming option sounds AWESOME. Will check that out.

And that is a *great* tip about the Harmony One - my old Harmony 670 finally up and died completely this morning, so I'm definitely on the lookout for a new remote, and the One seems to have great reviews.

Thanks so much!

I'd get an Oppo blu-ray player if I were getting any optical playing thing these days.

Yay, I was hoping you'd respond! :)

I know you've mentioned Oppo to me before, but I'd forgotten. Thanks for the reminder! Will check those out. (I am also totally jealous of your popcorn thingy, hee.)

The popcorn thing was amazing.

Dawn's Samsung BluRay played the con discs with only glitches in Kiss Me, Kill Me, King Rat and Pursuit of Happiness - but so far those vids have glitched on every DVD player I've played them on, so it is possibly the discs.

Aw man, that sucks. :( Thanks for the info, though - I do like Samsung and will probably be looking at their Blu-Ray options.
