Zach plunks himself on the couch, and glances over at Chris. The younger man averts his gaze.
“Are you crying?”
“No,” Chris says, quickly running his hand over his eyes. “I'm just tired.”
“Chris, I can see you. You're crying.”
Chris shakes his head. “No, it's just the light.”
Zach grabs Chris's hand and pulls him closer so he can get a better look. There are tears pooled in the younger man's eyes.
“What's wrong?” Zach asks with concern.
Chris pushes him away, his eyes glancing to the floor.
“Zach, it's nothing.”
Zachary pulls Chris towards him, wrapping his arms and a leg around the younger man.
“Chris,” he whispers. “Tell me what's wrong.”
Chris struggles in Zach's arms, finally pulling himself free.
“It's nothing, I don't want to talk about it.”
Zach lets out an exasperated sigh. “It's nothing, but you don't want to talk about whatever this 'nothing' is?”
“Seriously, Zach, it's nothing!” Chris exclaims, his voice rising.
Zach is silent for a moment before he continues questioning the younger man.
“Chris, tell me. Did something happen? Your parents? Are they okay?”
Chris nods his head, “they're fine, they're fine. Nothing like that.”
Zach reaches out to touch Chris's face. Gently clasping Chris's jaw, he turns the younger man to face him.
“Is it us then? Is something wrong?”
Frustrated, Chris grabs Zach's hand and stares him down.
“I'm telling you, it's nothing! There's nothing wrong with us, and nothing wrong with my parents, or whatever other situation you can dream up. There's nothing wrong, period.”
“So, why are you crying?” Zach asks, looking at the younger man with confusion. “I don't understand.”
Chris lets out a frustrated sigh.
“You're going to laugh at me.”
“Chris, I won't,” Zach whispers. “Please tell me.”
Chris takes a deep breath before he speaks.
“Okay, there were these two sisters, and one was going away to college.. The younger sister didn't understand why the older sister had to leave, and then the younger one gave the older one a birthday card because she wouldn't be there to give it to her on her actual birthday..” Chris's voice trails off, as tears build up in his eyes again.
Zach stares at Chris, and a smirk begins to form at the corner of the older man's mouth.
“You're crying at a Hallmark commercial?!” Zach nearly shouts.
Chris laughs at himself, pushing Zach away.
“Shut up! It was sad!”
Zach smiles, and lets out a quiet laugh.
“You are so corny,” he says, pulling Chris in for a hug. “I love it.”
