Staycation all I ever wanted

I'm on vacation next week, which will culminate with the Texas road trip. I don't have a ton of plans for the rest of the week, except I probably want to go to the record store in Rayne with the weird hours. They're only open Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, so I only get to go if I'm not working on one of those days. I have kind of vague ideas ( Read more... )

I'm sure it will, because you won't stay in bed 24/7 after the surgery and cancel several weeks of physical therapy. My mother's botched recovery was 100% self-inflicted.

I started binging Black Sails too, and watched a bunch of it over Labor Day. I am just starting season 4 now. I liked season 3 the best so far. I find all the characters completely unlikable - there is not a single good, kind or trustworthy person among them - although I do have a soft spot for Rackham because at least he is amusing and doesn't spend all of his scenes moping around. I'm surprised at how the majority of the show is about political machinations in Nassau and not about sailing the high seas. I think I will watch One Piece again after this to experience a story about pirates who are more interested in travel and adventure than establishing a colony. On that point I find the pirates of Black Sails depressingly normative.

I guess I see New Providence Island as less a "colony" and more a place to be free of England. My favorite season has been the 2nd, because it seemed to hew the closest to what I saw as the series' sort of thesis statement; plus I found the ending of it really satisfying (although part of me was like damn, sorry for murdering your dad and blowing up your home Abigail, you seemed all right!) I had the same "are these pirates ever gonna do pirate stuff?" reaction initially, but just came to accept that wasn't what the show was really about. I sympathize with Max the most I guess, she was born into slavery and had very little agency even after she was manumitted, so I can't really fault her for making decisions that put her own welfare first. I was pulling for a Max/Ann/Jack throuple. (I still have a few episodes left.)

So One Piece was good? I should watch it if only to complete my queer pirate media trifecta.

I highly recommend One Piece - this comment thread inspired me to post an entry about it - but if you are hoping for overtly queer content i don't think you'll find it. From what i understand the original manga has a few problematic "man in a dress" characters and a few less-problematic trans characters, but the live action doesn't have either (unless you count a trans actor in a role that i don't think is intended to be a trans character). On the other hand, there is refreshingly no romance or pairings in the show at all, which i think is one of the reasons why i like it so much - people just get to be outrageous, zany characters in their own right, without needing to contextualize themselves into a relationship. If anything i'd say it's a delightfully asexual show. It's also full of slapstick humor, which is quite a change of pace from Black Sails or even Our Flag Means Death, which is more of a rom-com.

I really disliked the ending, unless we want to assume that Silver was lying about Flint's end, which i choose to do 😁 I think Max ( ... )
