so it's been a few months since I last posted and I'm not going to go into "what I've been up to" in that time. I'm more here for advice and maybe some consolation for a relatively trivial problem

Well, I am pretty broke too, and also wonder where all these people get their travel money. It's not Hawaii, but if you want a cheap place to stay (i.e. an air mattress on my living room floor) you are welcome to come out to Berkeley any time! I love visitors! We could go to wine country for the day, go to the ocean, wander San Francisco, go to a play at one of the many local theaters, etc . . .
If for some reason you didn't have anymore solid plans for the next year and decided to study abroad, I'm sure with a big of digging you could find some scholarships to help you foot the bill.
I've made the solid decision to go on a massive trip abroad after my year-long commitment is over. I haven't decided on where or how long or with whom, but I'm making the decision to actually go somewhere and that's a start, right? So now that I have a somewhat foggy goal in mind, I can start planning for it and saving and all that fun stuff.
I suppose. I've always felt that I've been the traveling sort, I just can't find the means to do it - money is an issue and there's no way I'd get financial help from my parents. I think a lot of it has to do with my parents instilling in me a sense of traveling being pointless and a waste of money. I don't believe it but having had it drilled into my skull from a young age has led me to feel guilty or hopeless about it. *sighzorz*
Yeah -- some folks don't have to try as hard as others, do they? If it's all about the benjamins, I'd look into scholarships or some sort of volunteer gig where they help get you somewhere neat in exchange for a month or two of volunteer work. Most of 'em are longer term commitments, but I know there are a few shorter ones to be found.
Like I said to Marina ^ up there, I've decided to make some tentative plans to go on a big trip somewhere next summer/fall. There's a program called Mercy Ships, I think I told you about it - but that's a months long commitment which I'm more than willing to accept. I'd go to the West Africa and do some free checkups and things on the folks there - seems like I decent plan so far. We'll see if anything more comes up.
Speaking of Mercy Ships, I just read Kaureen's recommendation letter that she wrote for me and it was actually really genuinely nice. I was a little surprised. I alway thought she despised me and thought I was a God-less whore.
