Even though hungover, managed to drag myself into Soho for a late lunch with the Eurocrat yesterday at Balans in Old Compton Street, who did a surprisingly good burger surprisingly quickly, given how busy they were. I once read a comment by a former planning minister to the effect that he greatly regretted not having pushed through legislation to make large grants available for the redevelopment of any building ugly enough to get listed.

The above grade II monstrosity being a prime example.

Pinky, have I never told you the story about this? Ian Fleming was pissed off at Erno's architecture so he gave a character in one of his books the name 'Goldfinger'. Erno looked into sueing but was advised against it.

Erno also designed the Inland Revenue place that is now Metro Central Heights flats in Elephant & Castle. Interestingly, it was then called Alexander Fleming House...
