Web Hosting?

Jun 26, 2009 18:45

Yet another computer / web related post - might actually do a proper update one day - aaaaaaaaaanyways...

I have been thinking for a while that I should probably make a nice little portfolio of all my web stuff, and stop stealing webspace from a university I don't go to any more(!). Also, for the paid project I'm doing at the moment, I'm using Read more... )

We host a number of Drupal based sites at work and they generally run without any problems. The only thing I say is to make sure you keep it upto date with the latest patches and security fixes as they become available otherwise it won't take long for it to get compromised :(

Otherwise depending on what you need myself and Claire (the purple one) have our own server for hosting sites so we may be able to help you out.

I think I just need to get my head around how it works and how everything is put together really - that kind of thing doesn't really come very naturally to me, I had to get Chris to help me install an upgrade last night which he found really easy (despite never having used Drupal before!) but I had no idea what to do *sigh*!

Would be really awesome if you and Claire could host my site - how much would you charge?

Also, I understand that this is a pretty retarded question, but what do I actually need to upload to the internet? I'm guessing probably the whole drupal folder, but are the databases and stuff normally included in that or do I have to do something with PHPMyAdmin as well?

Does your ISP give you any webspace? If it does, it's probably pretty reliable for up-time.

The URL masking from http://www.just-the-name.com is superb, if you want to pay money and look properly professional. That's what I use for http://www.andstarscollide.com/biography.html (which is actually http://www.rjlaban85.plusnet.com/biography.html - I've never seen masking that does all individual files before).

I asked Chris if BT gave us webspace and he said I'd have to pay extra for it - I'd rather not give them any more money, and don't think I'd trust them as our internet service is pretty crap! Good idea though :).

That site you linked to looks really good though, thank you... also I know I should probably know this, but what is URL masking? I am a shrewtard.

I used to use stpwebhosting.com. I came across your journal, was wondering if you'd like to become friends.

Get in touch with janieluk maybe ? He runs his own website as a business and uses Drupal, though I know he's extremely short on time because he can't find anyone available to do the Drupal for him so he's doing it himself. But it means he does know more about it than he might otherwise. He is terribly busy, but I'll give him an elbow to the ribs so he looks out for something from you if you like.
Also I know prolificdiarist is internetty !
