I'm very sorry for what you're going through. Losing loved ones this way is particularly hard, even though you see it coming, there's nothing really that can prepare you for that.

My grandma went through something similar, although it didn't last that long, and one day I came in the hospital room and she started talking about her granddaughter who would be the same age as me -- she didn't recognize me, and not to agitate her all I could do was listen to her and nod and tell her that yes, I'd like to meet her. That was the worst.

No, there isn't anything that can prepare you for seeing a loved one go through this. For me, it is doubly hard because he isn't the only one in my family who has got dementia. It is incredibly hard and I take comfort in writing about it.
