I've tried the 'it's not a big deal' line all this while, but then it occurred to me after hearing the big guy at it as well that it is a very big deal. It's mostly been a lot of male chauvinistic jokes but today was way over the line, becayse they actually brought some of us into it.
Unfortunately not in MNC IT type company (though I've heard that even the emphasis on behaviour doesn't always work) in pseudo MNC services crap that has only just started having branch HR. But like I said, it's mostly female dominated so the atmosphere has never been so prone to crap like this.
I did ask HR to send out a general mail requesting that courtesy and decorum be maintained and all. Let's see what they do. The HR guy was a lot more sympathetic than I expected (he usually tries to fob off non-appraisal/recruitment related stuff to admin or some other dept:o )
btw I read somewhere, not sure if it was Vorizon or someplace in the USA; there was an email floating titled '25 reasons why beer is better than women' *am sure it circulated in india as well* which obviously annoyed a lot of women, who grouped up and sued the Company itself ! Finally they were awarded US 2.2M$
Asked the boss to speak to the guy in question. Think that might actually happen as opposed to HR asking the big guy to request people to behave! Not that I think the guy willchange but still, he needs to know!
I really hope that the guy from Human Resources is going to do something about the current situation at your workplace because you shouldn't have to tolerate such nonsense.
Good for you! You always come across as very mellow so it must have taken a lot for you to finally reach the boiling point, and I sure the HR was impressed in just the same way.
thank you:) Not very mellow any more and very glad for it. I've realised it was the mellowness or the indifference that let this guy think he could get away with being plain offensive.
Yes, I think that was the issue here. We kept tolerating it, or ignoring it, so this joker thought it was okay to continue talking rubbish. And he feels encouraged because there are a couple of women and men who just shake their heads fondly and decalre that that's just the way he is, as though it's perfectly fine to be a chauvinistic, sexist, idiot.
I'm making it a little better by reducing interaction with the whole bunch. I also discussed this with my boss, so if i'm ever told i'm not intercating enough with the team, I've got an answer to give him!

That way atleast in these MNC IT type companies, they have these huge emphasis on work-environment behaviour, anoymous ethics helplines etc
Can the HR be influenced to send a general behaviour email to the entire office or something ?

I'm glad you're not just putting up with all this, and taking a stand instead. Not enough people do that, honestly.
