litter

After watching the Inauguration, I kept checking in on the CNN live feed for a bit as folks departed and commentators commented. One of the things that struck me hard was the litter left behind. I've seen Kindergartners who knew better to clean up after themselves. If you were on the Mall and bought a program or newspaper or flag or even accepted a ( Read more... )

My first job, at the age of 15, was working in the Youth Conservation Corps for the Dept. of the Interior on South Padre Island National Seashore. Yes, it was a remnant of the Works programs from the Great Depression era. We did some very cool work, such as making wilderness trails wheelchair accessible, sea turtle conervation, concrete and other construction and repair, but every single week the entire crew of the eight of us did garbage pickup on the single, medium-sized parking lot at the Visitor's Center, the last stop for the beach where cars were allowed ( ... )

I've worked jobs at a snack bar, as a lifeguard, in a $2 movie theater, and at Burger King. People are pigs. One of the jobs as lifeguard (at a members only pool) was picking up trash that had blown outside the fencing and around the pool area. Some you can chalk up to forgetful unminded children, but not all.

But then again, I'm the kind of girl who started plastic recycling at the small pharmacy I worked at when appalled at all the plastic bottles tossed out. I'll carry recyclables and trash contained in my car until I get home or find a place to properly dispose of stuff. I've thought about getting violent at folks who toss stuff out car windows... I feel ya.

Thank you! It's such a simple little thing but so many people don't do it. I have learned to carry a bag with me whenever I go for a walk, and I've had to stop walking my ferrets outside because of the dangers.

ONe of the things I do as a quick pick-me-up is to park a little farther from the entrance of a store and then find 2 or three carts and return them to the corral... doesn't take me any time at all and it makes me feel good. Except for when someone unloading leaves theirs just as I'm indulging myself. That makes for a backfire. And usually a comment from me (or once, just because I was obviously gathering them and they looked right at me before leaving their cart in my path I waited until they were in their car and then positioned the thing directly behind their bumper. And walked into the store.)
Ahem. Anyway. It is a good feeling-maker on grumpy days.

I signed a do not litter pledge in Kindergarden back in 1978, and I still adhere to that. I guess I'm just odd, sadly enough.
