I lost faith in "if something is meant to happen, it will." If you want something, make sure you go out and get it.

Personaly, my view is that whatever life throws your way is meant to happen and how you react is how you are meant to react. How can anyone say weither or not something was meant to happen. For all you know you could be wrong. Then again I could be wrong too. To summarize my point, I think that because whatever happens you are meant to encounter and whatever you do is the required responce, and thus you are free to do anything you want as it (granted that all actions have consiquences, some more appearant than others) So though it is fate you are free of it.
