I'm having a thought, here...

Cutting out the entire 'Jack as cannibal chief' bit actually makes DMC a decent movie. What was the point of that sequence, anyway?

It went on a little bit too long, but I admit: I always giggle childishly when he grabs the EITC paprika and puts it under his arms.

Well, yeah. There are lots of funny moments in that sequence, but it always seems to me that the sequence in general is a bit superfluous, really. ;-)

It made my toes curl in embarrassment, really. I was glad it was over.

I re-watched it this afternoon and fast-forwarded through that part for the first time. It made the whole experience far more pleasurable.

Sorry to blunder into your journal like this (hello). I recall somewhere, guess it was the DVD commentary, the writers saying they needed a scene to show that land was no safer for Jack than the sea, or else he could just avoid the Kraken that way. The thing is, that sequence doesnt' really do that. If they'd found an island without cannibals, it would have been okay, right? What they should have done was have him go ashore in some town and then nearly get arrested. Now THAT is a compelling reason to stay off land. But I guess it wouldn't have been quite as exciting? Certainly less racist. But hey, who knows what goes on in the mind of Jerry Bruckheimer? (My theory: very little.)

LOL...very little indeed.

Blunder away. I'm cool with it.
