Tragic

I thought college was home to more open minded individuals and people willing to debate in...well...a more sophisticated manner. If you wanna know what I am talking about...you should peruse over to the iupui LJ forum...located on my friends list. But it was debate so of course I enjoyed it...and I got to at least see that there are some people ( Read more... )

Hey! Since you were kind enough to check out my website and leave a comment on my LJ, I thought I'd mosey on over here and do the same. :) Oh, gosh -- I hope the pic of me going after the yellow smiley guy with a letter opener didn't seem TOO weird! *LOL* That thing of my mom's shakes and sings this awful tune, and it just freaks me out. I thought it was a funny photo, though.

Heh. Yeah, me too. Here's the thing that gets me. If I don't know something, I will admit it. If I am mistaken or flat-out wrong about something, I can admit it and/or apologize (like I did with you). I'm not some unthinking bigot or idiot, yet I was totally treated like one in that thread. It was very discouraging because it all started with me asking a question about whether a particular viewpoint should be considered homophobic or not, and it devolved into a shouting match with people telling me I'm "odd" and "wrong" and ( ... )

Thank you for the well wishing for my friend. It is not a matter of him getting back into that stuff...it really is just huis past getting back up with him by his parents finding out. But anyways he does severly need help from somewhere.

I aim to be an understanding enough person ^_^

Another thing I find interesting is that you got a masters in library science! This is my goal after I get my undergrad degree...you rock!

Hee. You got "mad props" in my LJ for being cool. It really is amazing what a kind word can do for a person's day. Forgive my parting shot at the other folks in the thread, I couldn't help myself. *hangs head*

Well, in that case, you rock as well! :P If you're interested, I usually have a get-together at my place about once a month. I live downtown, and there are often a few SLIS people in attendance. It'd be a good way to learn more about the program and meet some of the folks who are actually in the process at the moment, if that sounds interesting. I'll be having people over on Sat, 2/19, if you want to swing by for a while. Just e-mail me if you want directions; friends and/or significant others can come too. Like I said, it's pretty much a monthly thing so you are welcome anytime. It's always fun to get to know new people!

don't worry about josh too much. i'm sure he can mosey out of this one, he is eighteen. his mom... shouldn't be able to touch him.

heard anything new, though? i'd be interested to hear.

oh, and apology accepted. i was being moody. and you had valid reason to be angry.

...oh, and don't pretend things didn't happen. make sure everyone knows they did, to make those people who pretend they didn't happen feel guilty. in fact, i suggest you tell people the person would wish you didn't tell.

-malicious grins-

Glad to hear that there are people who have what you have to say on the issue. In fact, universities are perhaps the least open-minded forums in the country much of the time. This has been the case ever since the 1970s, or arguably even the late 1960s. Unfortunately, even in an academic environment, the rule holds that the one shouting louder will generally "win" the argument over the one actually thinking and logically discussing. The only choice left for "intellectuals" is to find an artificial environment where they are shielded from everyone else, and then debate. Ideally, a university should be precisely that. In reality, it's quite the opposite.
