Cassy--Do you know anything about violin? Another friend wants to get her five-year-old daughter started on it (daughter is highly interested), and doesn't know what size to start with.

Or anyone else who secretly knows about instruments, any input?

Hehe... I just practically raped poor Colleen's entry with comments begging Sarah D. to help me :-P I needed someone to post something for me on Bolt as soon as humanly possible, and she's done that... would you happen to know of two young parents of at least 19 years of age who could do that stupid survey for me tonight? :-\ Two people who agreed to do it never did, and it's due tomorrow, so I'm really in a bind...

Okay a different friend answered but I hope this helps you:

"hey colleen

my mom teaches violin to the kids at her school. she uses several different sizes of violin depending on the size of the kid. it really is dependent on arm length. most stores that sell/ rent violins use a special ruler to determine what size is best, so if your friend goes to the store with her daughter they would probably be able to tell pretty easily. when i was 5, i played a 1/4 size"

And then I got this:

"Piece of advice though: rent/buy VERY cheap, until the mother/daughter is sure she wants to continue. My parents rented one for me for the first month, then bought a relatively cheap one. Years later, when they knew I was sticking with it, they bought me a more expensive one."

I'm pretty sure she can have your daughter "fitted" to a violin at a music store. They would help her figure out what would be an appropriate size.

and by "your daughter" I obviously meant "her daughter". :)

I have to take her to Billings to do it. Unless I get lucky.
